North Yorkshire is the largest county in England and this August its events calendar will not disappoint; from top notch food to arts and crafts, there is something to suit all interests.
So whether you have kids in tow or you’re planning a romantic break for two, North Yorkshire has some gems worth packing up the car for. 1. Filey International Food Festival
If you or your loved one is a foodie, then the renowned Filey International Food Festival is the place to visit this summer. Held from 12th-13th August this festival is home to a wide range of foodie delights. Expect a carnival atmosphere with music as well as a fantastic range of food from Cretan olives to award winning puddings. There will be food available from across the world as well as excellent local produce. Local chefs will be in attendance too.
2. Castle Howard Proms
Rousing music, beautiful surroundings and special guests; the Castle Howard Proms on 19th August will be a night to remember. Held on the North Lawn in the grounds of Castle Howard this is an evening for all the family; expect top class music including classics and songs from musicals. From Brit Award winners to classical stars, keep your eyes and ears peeled for guests on the night and the evening will be rounded off with an impressive laser and firework display.
3. Whitby Regatta
A weekend full of aquatic competition and entertainment, the Whitby Regatta from the 18th – 21st August, is a great weekend to see Whitby and all it’s coastal glory. There will be yacht racing, rowing and entertainment to keep the whole family happy. A well loved event that has been running for over 150 years, the Whitby Regatta attracts large crowds for a weekend of seaside fun. Stay right until the end for their impressive firework display.
4. Niddart Trail
For the artsy and crafty among you the Niddart Trail is a must see this August. Taking place around Nidderdale from 18th-28th August, this trail is made up of listings from many different artists, workshops, galleries and more, who are showcasing (or demonstrating) various different types of art; from ceramics to jewellery. To top it all off this trail is free and run by volunteers.
5. Muston Scarecrow Festival
Infamous near and far, this unusual event is worth making time for. With more and more people visiting every year, the Muston Scarecrow Festival is an unusual way to experience North Yorkshire. This year it will be held from 29th July – 6th August. The festival started in 1999 and since then residents have been making an impressive selection of scarecrows, drawing in crowds and raising money for the village and a selection of local causes.
