I booked The Stable for a family weekend break, 2 adults, 2 children under 12 and our dog.
I didn't have much in the way of expectation as we hadn't been to this part of the UK before but we had the most wonderful break. The photos of The Stable don't quite do it justice. It is beautifully decorated, thoughtfully equipped and comfortable. The views from the sitting room and main bedroom were breath taking. To add to this was the truly quaint surprise of the Steam Train coming along the bottom of the garden, some way away but visible and audible. It was the icing on the cake for us. The Stable and other apartments are on the main road, closer than we thought but the birds in the trees were more audible than traffic and so the road was of no real concern and caused no issues. Plenty of parking spaces for the 4 apartments too. Before we arrived we recieved a call from the owner to check estimated arrival times and to let us know we could be in the apartement an hour earlier than check in time of 3, which was lovely. A welcome basket with Easter goodies was warmly recieved and so thoughtful. The Stable is located 10 mins from Puzzlewood which we thoroughly recommend. 20 mins ish from Tintern where there is an Abbey we recommend seeing and 20 mins ish from Chepstow where we looked around the castle. The Stable is within walking distance of the High Street with a Tesco and petrol station and some lovely restaurants/take aways close by. The park and cafe set behind Lydney High Street were a lovely surprise, as was the public footpath opposite the house to which access is gained in the last road on the left as she come to The Stable, behind the houses to the right as you enter the road. We had breakfast in the garden overlooking the forest. The garden is beautiful and well kept and thoughtfully placed outdoor furniture is dotted around for sunbathing, eating and just watching the birds. Our children have told me they want to come back. We might just do that!

Just back home after a wonderful stay at The Carriage.
The apartment is just as the photos show, a real home from home. The gardens are beautiful and we spent time in our favourite spot at the white table with our late afternoon drink after a busy day exploring the area. We arrived on the Sunday afternoon just as summer was beginning to show its face and it stayed with us until we left on the Friday. We visited Puzzlewood which was just lovely; quite humid when in there but just beautiful with little sculptures dotted around. Understood why it was called Puzzelwood as if you're not careful you can end up going round, and round, and round in circles LOL! We also visited Bath and did the TootBus trip which is so worthwhile and a fantastic way to see this beautiful city. Recommend purchasing tickets online as for us they proved slightly cheaper. Next we took a trip on the Steam Railway in Lydney (where we were staying and in fact could see the train passing by the bottom of the garden on Sunday when we arrived). A real throw back to the good old days that those of a certain age will remember!! Finally we went to Clearwell Caves which was incredible and so well presented. Definitely worth a visit. A Tesco was close by so we could get provisions for suppers at the apartment and we visited The Globe at Alvington which was great for our last night. We met Elaine the owner who was just lovely, but sadly we didn't get to meet Doug. Nothing is too much trouble and honestly we would thoroughly recommend this wonderful slice of peacefulness next to the Forest of Dean; just stunning.

Wonderful apartment.
It was clean, beautifully decorated and furnished, with all the facilities you could need. The owner had thoughtfully provided a pint of milk and some, naughty but nice, chocolate biscuits, caramel wafers and (my favourite, how did they know) milk chocolate teacakes. These were very much appreciated, thank you! The quirky garden is delightful and my dog loved having a sniff and mooch around the different areas, the ponds were very tempting though! The views from the apartment are stunning, we could see the steam, and hear, the trains going past the at the bottom of the hill. The stairs leading to the apartment are very steep but the work-out meant the biscuits were well-earned! Might be a nice idea to provide a dog water bowl in the kitchen as there is a mat there anyway, and maybe one less human treat and a dog biccy instead? I'd recommend checking out the steam train timetable and make a day of it. We stopped off at Parkend and enjoyed lunch at the cafe. We didn't have time, but were told The Fountain Inn is a great dog friendly pub, There are plenty of take-aways and supermarkets in Lydney, if you want to stay in. We took a short car journey to Clearwell, we couldn't visit the caves as we had a dog and they seemed to be closed on a Monday, but the village is lovely and we had a delicious afternoon tea at Tudor Farmhouse, a bit pricey but worth it! Note that the castle is a wedding venue so visitors aren't able to go in, but there are some lovely walks around the village.

The Rowan studio is an excellent choice for a week (or longer) holiday in the Cotswolds at any time of the year.
The apartment is situated in the quiet village of Cranham in the lovely Cotswold countryside and is an ideal base for a walking holiday. The Rowan studio is also just a few miles drive to Gloucester with its historic docklands and also the spa town of Cheltenham. The Rowan studio accommodation is very nice. The open plan apartment is modern, spotlessly clean and surprisingly spacious; it includes a well-equipped kitchen area (including dishwasher), a nice bathroom, huge comfortable bed, recliner settee, smart TV and nice dining table with chairs in the dining area. Parking is just outside your front door. The owners provided some nice treats including a lovely home-made fruit cake and locally produced goats cheese; they live in the house next door and are available to help if needed but otherwise will leave you in peace to enjoy your stay. Our visit was in March, we really enjoyed our week at the Rowan studio and were sad to leave for home at the end of our stay. We spent most of the week walking in the surrounding countryside using the local walks in the booklets provided by the owner. It has to be said that in March the weather can vary, but provided you are well wrapped up and with suitable footwear it is surprising how much blue sky and sunshine can be around to enjoy at that time of year.

Our week at The Stables was most enjoyable, in spite of a couple of minor niggles.
I was initially disappointed to find that the property was on a busy main road, having been given the impression from the photographs on the website that the property was in a more rural location. However, the road traffic noise was not as intrusive as feared, and the location made it well placed for getting into Lydney for shopping and for accessing the Forest of Dean. We can recommend a look at Lydney harbour, Tintern Abbey, a walk around Cannop Ponds and a ride on the Dean Forest steam railway (audible and just visible through the trees at the rear). After a long car journey to get there, the steps up to the property to carry luggage up to the apartment were a challenge, so the generous welcome gift of snacks and treats as well as provisions for a hot drink on arrival was much appreciated. Due to the single glazing, there was condensation inside the windows on colder mornings, but this will hopefully be resolved with the addition of secondary glazing, which is intended by the owners (subject to planning permission). The apartment was nevertheless very cosy and comfortable, clean, well equipped and attractively decorated, with a quirky, eclectic collection of artwork and ornaments. We can certainly recommend a stay at The Stables.
