What our customers say about their holidays

    • Jonathan - Verified booking

This was booked as a last minute replacement when our booking (through different company, not Sykes) for another property in Southport was cancelled just over a week before we arrived.

We had looked at this property when planning our trip but originally rejected it due to the spiral staircase which we though might cause us problems, in the event we managed it OK, but it was a bit difficult for my partner to climb and descend. When we arrived we were met by the owner who showed us around and came out with some rather unexpected requests. We were asked to save electricity by (if possible) only using the dishwasher, washing machine and cooker (!) between 09:00 and 15:00 when the solar panels would be providing power. The freezer was turned off and we had to ask for it to be turned on. There were also notices left all over the property telling us to do (or not do) this and that, not very welcoming. We were asked not to lift the blinds of the rooms as they caught on the window catches (due to being fitted badly), but the whole place felt dusty and airless so we needed to lift them just to get some air into it, it would also have been nice to be able to look outside during daylight hours! We were told (and there was a notice!) not to try and adjust the heating as it was controlled from the owners property. I felt it humiliating to return to the property after an evening visiting friends in town to have to call him and ask if we could possibly have some heating as it was cold inside. The parking was exceedingly tight to enter and exit, fortunately my (average sized Honda) is equipped with parking sensors and a rear camera, otherwise we would probably have had to leave it on the street outside and carry our luggage a considerable distance to the property, which is located at the bottom of the owners garden. The main bedroom (downstairs) has a large window, but the glass is frosted so you couldn't actually see into the garden from it! There were also no opening windows to it, just some tiny vents. The upstairs bedroom was small and cramped. The place certainly has character, but it was a bit weird to be cooking and eating in what had been carefully preserved as the original stables. Fortunately, most days we were eating out with our friends, either on trips out during the day, or in the evening at their house. Overall, not a great second week to our holiday, particularly compared to the lovely house in North Wales that we had stayed in for the first week.

On arrival it was an instant .

.Ahhh how lovely, this is perfect !!! Easy access via the black gates for our Free Lander to park up, with plenty of space for ourselves & two Cockapoo’s to enjoy the enclosed courtyard. Which looked pretty with filled pots of flowers & shrubs, a comfy bench, a patio table/ chairs. Enjoyed our first morning eating breakfast outside in the sunshine, some afternoons too, was a nice little sun trap so made the most of the outside area when possible over a typical rainy / windy bank holiday. Entering this little gem of a find it felt warm & inviting, very clean with tasteful decor & furnishings throughout with everything provided that you could possibly need for an enjoyable, home from home comfortable stay. Good layout when taking dogs, being able to close off rooms etc. Lots of little extras, appreciated the milk & welcome treats, thank you & a Woof from Nelly & Teddy too. Especially loved the warm glow of the lighting which made relaxing of an evening feel very cosy. The night lights were an excellent idea. Great location & perfect base to explore surrounding areas which we enjoyed doing so on foot & via the frequent bus service. So close to the dog friendly beach with a short walk to a beach cafe which welcomed dogs. Gorgeous Ashton Park to walk around just five minutes away which you pass as you stroll into the busy friendly Town Centre. Enjoyed the walk along the beach front, passing the Pier & the attractions. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Mews Cottage.. even met the lovely lady who prepares the accommodation for guests, taking the opportunity to thank her too. Best wishes, Sandy & Tony.

This was my second stay at Mews Cottage, my husband & I stayed in October 2023 with our dogs.

This time it was a mum/daughter get away with the dogs. It was as remembered very clean & cosy, kitchen well equipped for our needs. There is a throw provided to put on the bed if needed should your dogs go on the bed, we had brought one with us on this occasion & used that to cover the bed. Close to the dog friendly North beach (5mins walk) which the dogs loved. We were lucky enough to be there for the air show which was an added bonus as this wasn’t planned. I have a Qashqai which I could park quite comfortably in the yard. The small enclosed yard is great for the dogs as it is safe & they can’t get out. We were lucky with the weather & only had a couple of rainy days. We had a couple of visits from family over the week & were able to enjoy sitting outside in the yard which is a great sun trap. It is only a 5min walk to the town with all amenities, there are a lot of dog friendly places to eat which is great. Michael is at the other end of the phone if needed. We only had one occasion to contact him just before we left & he responded quickly. We met the lady who cleans the property just before we departed, who is delightful & we had a long chat as we both originate from Manchester. All in all we had a lovely week & will definitely be back! Patricia, Lydia & Pooches

What Can I say about this little cottage, well it's tucked away and although it nestles between larger houses the owner has made it feel very private, great little courtyard suitable for my city car Aygo parked up with ease and was able to lock the yard doors and yet plenty of space to wonder round the patio garden wihich has floral dispalys and my favourite was the rocking bench which I spent a great deal of time on sitting reading perfect , a stroll to the beach and town and nearby park which has a little cafe which you must try, the accommodation was lovely lots of plugs, space, and great deco very clean the bed is just lovely best sleeps whilst here a warm cottage lots of hot water shower amazing cooked lots of lovely meals, the town is buzzing with shops all you need and a great base for visting Blackpool and Fleetwood ect, then we came back to a wonderful little warm cosey cottage, after tea we strolled up to the pier and walked on the sandy beach perfect holiday well thought out little hide-away cottage, the town is very clean and friendly people this holiday is just what we needed and we would like to thank the owner for making it perfect best wishes Janet and Dave Whittingham

We really enjoyed our stay in Southport at the Coach House!

The pool table, and access to Disney, Netflix & a wii games console kept our kids entertained throughout our stay. As a family we didnt have any issues with the spiral staircase to get upstairs, with the kids staying in the upper level bedroom while we stayed in the bedroom on the groond floor. The kitchen was well equipped, including a slow cooker which we used quite a few times while we were out and about. Parking was secure behind electric gates, albeit with a fairly tight reverse in. The location was handy for buses and a nearby Lidl. Its a pleasant 25 minute walk to Southport Centre, which we also did a few times when eating out. The gift of a bottle of wine and some easter eggs on arrival was also a nice treat. Overall its a really fantastic space, and if we ever visit Southport again we will be staying here!
