What our customers say about their holidays

What a creative and wonderful restoration that has taken place of the old building We stayed for 4 nights at the magistrates chambers we found it a novelty, loved the history and found it funny given we are practicing criminal lawyers!

It was adequate for a short stay, decorated for Christmas it had awesome character and appeal. House was super warm when we turned up the heating and used the log burner - to hot at night - so don’t become over zealous in ramping up the heating to quick. It is ordinarily left at 15 degrees - which keeps it ambient. Bedrooms are both a great size and the addition of sinks in the rooms was brilliant for getting ready at night The house was clean and fresh with a really nice welcome tray with some quality products to enjoy a very kind and thoughtful idea which we really appreciated. We didn’t have any issues with the noise that many keep referring to in reviews in fact we thought give the age, location and restorative work undertaken really done a great job - the odd tractor whizzing by was nothing and when you watch tv etc it is unnoticeable and didn’t cause any issues as far as we are concerned. It is rural and we spent our days outside anyway at night it becomes super quiet. The constructive critique of the place is as follows: - There are no laundry facilities which made it slightly difficult given our wet walking gear which sat in the hallway shoe tray for our duration so would like to see an innovative idea to sort that if possible because we want to visit again for a longer stay but don’t feel we can without laundry There wasn’t many places we could hand our wet heavy outdoor coats after our long walk getting drenched so had to leave them hanging over the bath which wasn’t ideal but it did dry them out with the heat We couldn’t work out where the lady birds kept coming from in the large double bedroom we found no less than 12 in the 5 days we were there The bed was soft but comfortable but we would welcome firmer pillows not feathered and slightly plumper and more of them please There needs to be more informative literature inside the cottage details of local medical services GP/Dentist/Optician, taxi, bus details to places (though we did notice in the communal hallway leaflets and a bus timetable) but would have loved to hear about local recommendations from the owners of things to see and do and food establishments to dine at as Ingleton town itself - the Italian was closed, we did visit the chippy it was cheap and very tasty, we didn’t try the pizza / kebab place as we didn’t get a chance to go You can drive further afield to dine places like Malham / Grassington etc which we did There are spectacular hills close by for long walks it is incredible and we want to return again for that Seasons bakery Oh my God what a discovery it has amazing food so do walk down to buy snacks, eat lunch, or simply treat yourselves to some deliciousness All in all the owners appear to have done a marvellous job with the renovations as otherwise the cottage itself was well equipped in the kitchen Personally we find the leave requests to empty bins and strip the bedding etc a good idea we usually always do this at all places we stay in anyway We needed more logs after the first night and couldn’t get any from the local coop or Asda. We discovered a place that sells logs at Wilson wood farm Bentham Road, David Cocket 07713 055404, it was perfect especially for bags of dry hardwood.

Our 4-night stay was unfortunately cut short and ruined by the neighbouring property’s cockerel which began crowing at 2am the first night and 3am the second night of our stay.

The crow was extremely loud and incessantly crowing throughout the very early hours through until the morning, approximately every 10 seconds or less. This meant that we had no sleep, so were exhausted and frustrated, and were therefore unable to go out and enjoy our holiday as planned. It was on New Year’s Eve at 5am (the 2nd morning into our 4-night stay) where we decided we simply could not and should not have to put up with the noise, so packed up and drove 4.5 hours home. The owners are aware of the noise issue, as they left earplugs with a sign about the cockerel on the bedside tables. These were insufficient in blocking out the noise. There was no prior, explicit warning about the cockerel waking at 2/3am. There was merely a note on the Sykes Cottages advert page stating we ‘may hear animal noises’. This was an understatement, and we feel did not properly warn us of a loud cockerel practically outside the bedroom window. Moreover, we have stayed on working farms before and are used to the expected farm animal noise, but at a reasonable hour after sunrise – certainly not constantly from 2am. We believe the owners of this property seriously need to address this noise disturbance as it is likely an environmental health issue, and will not be surprised if other paying customers expecting a peaceful holiday find this to be a problem. We were only refunded less than half of what we paid to stay here, which was disappointing. Not only was our New Year’s Eve holiday ruined, but we felt undercompensated for our disappointing experience. It was not the peaceful, pleasant holiday and start to the New Year we had so hoped for, especially after a very difficult year. It’s such a shame, as the property itself is lovely and well-equipped, but is overshadowed by a terribly loud noise disturbance. Avoid staying here if you expect a good night’s sleep.

We were looking for somewhere to stay having booked tickets for the settle-Carlisle railway and decided on the cells in ingleton, nicely priced the the property looked fantastic.

When we arrived on the Friday we weren’t disappointed,on entering the building the history was all around with many original features from the cell bars and windows to the arcitrave around the doors,a nice touch was flowers on the table with a cake, tea ,coffee milk and sugar just to get us going,we had already booked before reading a previous visitors revue so we were slightly apprehensive although the sights and sounds of the countryside are what I go there for, anyway we went out for an evening meal at the nearest pub the wheatsheaf ,promising not to be too late as we had to be up for a taxi to take us to the railway station, anyway 1st night no problem we were in bed just after 11:00 slept really well didn’t need the free earplugs and didn’t hear the cockerel !!, in fact the 1st time I did hear it was Sunday about 10:00 when I went to put recycling out,all in all we had a lovely weekend ,the cells were very tastefully decorated with period furniture and plenty of legal themed pictures, couldn’t be bothered to light the log fire but we were nice and toasty with the up to date central heating, and then It was over all too soon wished we could of stayed longer but it won’t be long before we are back in the cells for all the right reasons

Our second week in the Cells in 2019.

We really enjoyed it again and the bottle of wine was a nice surprise. A perfect base for exploring the surrounding area either on foot or using the excellent bus service less than 10 minutes walk away. The Cells is ideal as it is so handy for the village pubs, restaurants and shops, but just nicely away from the hussle and bustle. We were even blessed with bright and sunny weather for our October half term week as well. One one website I have seen some maniac ranting about noise from a cockerel - even to the extent of cutting a holiday short! Some people just love to complain. The bedrooms are triple glazed and ear plugs are even provided - not that we have ever felt the need to use them - although with my wife's snoring I could have been tempted! Soncerely I can say that the cockerel never woke us up once and one morning when I had heard him (albeit very faintly) I had to draw my wife's attention to it three times before she actually heard him. The Cells is a lovely place to stay and please, please, please don't let the maniacal ravings regarding the cockerel that I have seen left in feedback by one nut-job put you off. I fully expect to be booking into the Cells again soon.

I loved staying at Fiona's place!

The location is perfect - no more than 5 minutes (with a 3 year old walker) from the shops and pubs. And about 10-15 mins to the waterfall trail. It is also about 10 mins walk to the bus station (which we used every day since I am not a driver). The apartment is nicely decorated. It feels like being in a boutique hotel. In cold months, the apartment gets warm really quickly. I loved the view from the kitchen and sitting in comfortable sofas in the evenings. The shower worked great, too. Fiona, the owner, is such a great host. I loved the welcome pack she got ready for us. It was more appreciated since my children and I arrived very late after a 4 hour delay. I wouldn't get a chance to go to shops that late. Fiona also helped me with the online grocery delivery that I had missed. She also invited me to see her current project up the stairs - very exciting! I really loved staying at the cottage and communicating with Fiona. Thank you very much and I hope to visit soon again.
