Head to Knowsley Safari Park, over in Merseyside, for the adventure of a lifetime. The UK’s longest safari drive, you’ll see towering giraffes, magnificent Amur tigers and enormous elephants as you drive along the five-mile-long car-friendly route.
The safari drive allows you to get up close and personal with an array of exotic animals, viewing them in more natural conditions than the zoo. Face your fears and drive through the lion enclosure, where you’ll find a large pride of African lions. You’ll be able to watch from your car as they wander around the area, hunting and playing as they go.
If you want to get out the car and stretch your legs, then you can also explore sections of Knowsley Safari Park on foot too. The thrilling Amur Tiger Trail will take you through the home of two sister tigers, Bira and Sinda. You’ll be able to observe them wandering around the forest and maybe even swimming in the pond.
As well as the safari park, there’s plenty to do in the surrounding area of Merseyside and Liverpool, meaning you’re sure to have a fun-filled getaway. Seeing as a large part of the park is the drive-through safari, it’s probably best to travel here by car. Located in the town of Prescot, near Liverpool, the park is easily accessible from the motorway. Exit the M62 at Junction 6 and then carry on on the M57 before exiting at Junction 2. When you reach the roundabout simply follow the brown signs for the safari and you will arrive at the park.
If you’re planning on travelling by public transport, rather than driving, then don’t fear - there’ll still be plenty for you to see and do at Knowsley Safari Park. You’ll be able to explore the foot safari, watch the sea lion show and bird of prey display, and hop aboard the Baboon Bus, which will take you through the baboon enclosure.
The closest train station to the park is located in Prescot and is just a few minutes taxi ride away. Direct services run to Prescot from Liverpool, Wigan and Blackpool, or else you can make a connection if you’re coming from another part of the UK. If you fancy walking to the park from the station, then there are pedestrian footpaths directly to the park from Prescot town centre.
If you’re planning on travelling to the safari park by bus, then you’ll find Prescot Bus Station in town, just a short taxi ride away from the park. The bus station is served by a variety of local routes. If you’re coming from further afield, you could always catch a coach to Liverpool. Then connect with the 530 Safari Xpress straight from Liverpool City Centre, which runs on selected days throughout the school holidays.
One of the UK’s most popular seaside resorts, the town of Blackpool is home to Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Blackpool Tower and Blackpool Piers.
Just half an hour away, the vibrant seaside town of Southport is a great place to base yourself. Surrounded by beaches and countryside there’s something here for all.
An hour’s drive from the park, Lytham St Annes is a pretty and peaceful spot. You’ll find tastefully manicured gardens, a long sandy beach and plenty of boutique shops.
Hop over the border into Wales and you’ll find the lovely seaside resort of Rhyl just waiting for you. Only an hours drive away from the safari park, this is the perfect spot.
Treat the kids to a day out at Gulliver’s World Theme Park, in Warrington. Home to an array of amusement rides and family-friendly attractions, this is the ultimate spot for kids of all ages. Thrillseekers will love Western World and wild, nail-biting rides there, and water babies will adore the indoor SplashZone, where they can splash around in the warm water.
Home of the Beetles and Liverpool F.C., the legendary city of Liverpool is well worth a visit. Brimming with an array of shops, bustling bars, local pubs, lovely restaurants and pretty parks, you’ll find plenty to see and do here. What’s more, you’ll receive a warm welcome from the locals here, who are famous for friendly attitudes.
Home to Another Place, an incredible army of iron statures by famous artist Anthony Gormley, Crosby Beach is a breathtaking spot indeed. Situated on the Merseyside coastline, the life-sized figures are spread over two miles of beautiful sandy beach. Artwork aside, this is also a lovely spot to spend a day.
During the summer months, Liverpool’s waterfront is taken over by a giant inflatable obstacle course, perfect for an afternoon of adventure. Set in the water of Duke’s Dock, The Adventure Dock course consists of 50 elements joined together, including enormous free-fall slides, giant obstacles and ninja-worthy jumps.
Home to the Earl of Derby, a guided tour of the historic Knowsley Hall is a great option for a rainy afternoon. The building dates back to the 15th century and has been occupied by the Stanley family for the last 600 years. Beautifully restored to its former glory, the sumptuous rooms are bursting with artefacts and treasures.
