    Holiday cottages near Warwick Castle

A trip to Warwick Castle isn’t like visiting one of Britain’s other ancient buildings. It’s a holiday in the heart of medieval England. Warwick Castle is geared towards helping you live out your medieval fantasies. As well as touring the perfectly preserved rooms, you can see mock fights, weapon demonstrations and even jousting competitions in the grand and bustling castle grounds. Try your hand at archery, sword fighting, or lay down a picnic blanket, and soak up the splendour of 10th-century England, with a sandwich in hand.

With so many activities to try, foods to sample and duels to watch, one day isn’t nearly enough time to spend at Warwick Castle. Luckily, the West Midlands is home to some of the most beautiful holiday homes in Britain. From the pretty village of Long Compton to the historic town of Stratford-Upon-Avon, we’ve found you hundreds of lovely cottages to escape to after a long day in medieval England.

With an array of lovely holiday homes scattered throughout the surrounding area, you’re sure to find a picturesque countryside cottage to base yourself in for the weekend. If you’re travelling with the entire gang, then book yourselves a luxurious barn conversion, complete with an outdoor hot tub and BBQ. If it’s just the two of you, they why not keep things snug and cosy with your very own log cabin, set in the middle of the woods.

Whatever kind of holiday cottage your craving, the West Midlands can provide. Whether you’re after a crackling open fire, a bubbling hot tub or somewhere large enough to fit all your family and friends, all you have to do is ask. Why not get in touch with nature and book a cottage on a working farm? Or treat yourself to a splash of luxury and find somewhere with a ground floor swimming pool? When it comes to cottages in the heart of England, the clear blue sky’s the limit.

Incredibly well-preserved, Warwick Castle looks almost exactly as it did when English royalty walked its halls over 1,000 years ago. It’s a place that does justice to the phrase ‘bringing history to life’, with myth, magic and adventure hidden around every turn. Outside, you can delve even deeper into yesteryear, inside the Horrible History maze. Stroll inside its tall green walls and stumble into sections dedicated to the Vicious Vikings, Terrifying Tudors, the Frightful First World War, and much, much more.

Towns to stay near Warwick Castle

    Warwick

With the immense medieval fortress at its centre, historic charm from the castle and River Avon at its banks, it’s hard not to jump straight to Warwick itself for its easy reach.

    Henley-in-Arden

A neglected gem just a short way from Birmingham city centre, Henley-in-Arden mile-long high street boasts over 150 buildings of ‘architectural or historic interest’.

    Stratford-upon-Avon

This medieval market town of Stratford-upon-Avon is a great location for anyone who fancies stepping back in time. Home to perfectly preserved Tudor houses and pubs since the 14 century.

    Welford-on-Avon

Home to the famous Bell Inn, where Shakespeare met Ben Johnson, then caught pneumonia on his way home and died, Welford-on-Avon is another untainted slice of medieval England.

    Long Compton

While technically a village, not a town, Long Compton is just too gorgeous to leave off our list. Quintessentially English, Long Compton is lined with thatched cottages and timber-framed coaching inns, scattered across the bright green countryside.

Things to do near Warwick Castle

    Shopping in Royal Leamington Spa

Since the early 1800s, Royal Leamington Spa has been one of the best shopping spots in Britain. Today, no matter who you are and what you’re looking for, one of over 400 independent outlets, popular chains and stylish boutiques will have the ideal bargain for you. Along the way, make sure you take a look at the gorgeous Georgian and Edwardian architecture, which gives the area its historic charm.

    Jephson Gardens

Colourful flower beds and duck-filled ponds, quaint coffee shops and an immersive sensory garden: this beautiful Victorian Park sits in the centre of Leamington Spa and is one of our favourite places in the country for an afternoon stroll. If you’ve ever pictured yourself wandering without a care in the world, Jephson Gardens is the place to make it happen.

    Lord Leycester Hospital

If you’ve travelled to the West Midlands for the unrivalled medieval architecture of Warwick Castle, the next place you have to head is the Grade I listed building of Lord Leycester Hospital. This gorgeous group of timber-framed structures is one of the best-preserved examples of medieval courtyard architecture in Britain.

    Moseley Bog

Home to almost every kind of creature that calls the West Midlands home, Moseley Bog is a truly special place. If anything sums up just how magical this local nature reserve is, it’s the fact that many believe it was here that a young J.R.R. Tolkien first started to gather inspiration for his books: ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit’.

    Shakespeare’s New Place

We can’t venture to the West Midlands, without paying homage to Britain’s greatest bard. New Place is the site of William Shakespeare’s grand family home, and a contemporary heritage landmark. As well as housing several incredible sculptures and gorgeous gardens, the home has been painstakingly brought to life by the Shakespeare Birthplace, so you see it as Shakespeare himself did, over 400 years ago.
