Ghyll Foot Cottage in Ambleside is praised for its excellent central location and characterful charm. Guests appreciate the proximity to local amenities and the comfort provided by the cosy living spaces and well-equipped kitchen. While some guests have raised concerns about cleanliness and maintenance, the majority have enjoyed their stay, highlighting the comfortable beds and modern bathroom facilities.
Cleanliness has received mixed reviews. Some guests found the cottage clean and tidy, while others reported issues such as dust, stains, and a musty smell. The inconsistency suggests room for improvement in cleaning standards.
The location is highly praised for being central and convenient, with easy access to pubs, restaurants, and local attractions. The provision of parking permits is also appreciated, adding to the convenience factor.
Comfort is generally well-regarded, with guests finding the beds comfortable and the living areas cosy. However, some have mentioned issues with the size of the bed in the master bedroom and the stability of the bannisters.
Facilities are appreciated, especially the well-equipped kitchen and modern bathroom. However, there are several mentions of maintenance issues such as a leaky roof, broken tumble dryer, and wobbly bannisters, which affects the score.
There is no mention of gifts or special touches that would indicate thoughtfulness from the property owners towards the guests. Therefore, this category cannot be scored.
Situated in the heart of Ambleside village, this traditional whitewashed character cottage has been lovingly restored retaining much of the original charm whilst adding everything you could need for a memorable stay. Tucked away near to the village's main street in the heart of Ambleside, the cosy cottage has a woodburning stove and window seats offering a tranquil retreat and a great place to sit and watch the village. Leave the car behind, and explore the nearby Stock Ghyll Falls, or the beautiful walk to Grasmere along the shores of Rydal Water. For a more challenging walk head up to Fairfield Horseshoe one of the classic Lake District Walks. Literary fans can easily visit Rydal Mount, the family home of William Wordsworth, or simply enjoy the eclectic selection of shops, restaurants, bars and cafes that Ambleside has to offer.
Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

I have given it only 3 stars because there is clearly an ongoing problem with the toilet on the 1st floor, which needs to be dealt with. There was also no rubbish collection as expected on Thursdayâ¦â¦this needs to be organised . However, none of this spoilt our holiday.

! I felt so uncomfortable in this cottage. Dishwasher wasn't even emptied from previous stay. The beds in both bedrooms dirty with bedding full of short dark hairs. I could hardly sleep for three nights as I didn't even want to get into that filthy bed with filthy bedding. It wasn't near as cozy as it seems in the pictures. I couldn't wait to finish my stay in this place. The audacity of charging all this money to offer a place that it's so dirty from previous stay. You can tell they don't clean or hoover as items of previous stay were found under chair in living room. To top it all up, they house wasn't sound proof at all and you could hear all the noises from the pub down the road as well as the near by neighbours. Find somewhere else to stay!
