About this property

The spectacular Chateau de Cardou is located in the wooded hills of the Dordogne valley and boasts breathtaking scenery and its own private swimming pool. With 300m2 of space, it can comfortably sleep 10 guests and has to be seen to be truly appreciated!

Steeped in history, with its foundations dating back to the 13th Century, the Chateau de Cardou is listed by the “Historical Residences of Character.” It has had several rebuilds - most dramatically in the 15th century as military architecture evolved in line with the development of armaments. It was also rebuilt later in the 18th and 19th centuries, which has contributed to its unique charm and character.

The Chateau de Cardou has been part of the existing owners’ family for 271 years and was originally a wedding present from Joseph de Beaudet and his wife Catherine de Montalembert to their daughter Suzanne de Beaudet when she married Etienne-Jacques of Saint-Exupery in 1734. The owners restored one of the original wings in 2001 and this is the part of the chateau available to rent.

The chateau is ideally located only 25km from Bergerac with its Ryanair airport. The nearest town is Lalinde, 5km away, where you can pick up the essentials for your stay and enjoy typical French fare in a number of excellent restaurants.

Local activities include canoeing on the Dordogne River at Lalinde (3km), riverside beach and swimming in the Dordogne (5km), Lanquais lake (8km), hiking trails and mountain-biking at Lalinde, the Bastide Trail: Molières, Beaumont, Monpazier & Issigeac, the many châteaux of the Périgord, the beautiful market town of Sarlat, the Pécharmant vineyards and wine-tasting at the Château de Tiregand (visits available on request), golf at Les Merles (8km) and Belvès Flying Club (12km).

Accommodation

You enter the chateau to the spacious entrance hall and adjoining main staircase. The furnished living room has sofas, armchairs, table, TV, VCR and home stereo. The large dining room has a beautiful arched ceiling and contains rustic chairs, an armchair and settee, a dresser and a working fireplace. The kitchen comes with two separate cooking surfaces, microwave, oven, pressure cooker, spit-roast, fridge, dishwasher and all the usual kitchen utensils. There is also a downstairs shower room with lavatory. The chateau also includes a telephone, iron and ironing board, washing machine and tumble dryer, clothes line, hair drier, vacuum cleaner and wifi internet access.
On the first floor (in the XVth century tower) is the master bedroom with double bed, table and chairs, cupboard, armchair and fireplace. The en suite bathroom comes with bath, shower, basins and WC. Also on this floor are 3 twins (all with en suite bathrooms) and an additional double with a shower room.
Outside there is a fenced private swimming pool (12x6m), a helipad, a very large dining terrace, plenty of garden furniture and lots of parking spaces.

We had a fabulous stay at the Chateau. It is very grand and the owners were so wonderful. We had Angelique come and cook us a gorgeous dinner in the Chateau one night as well and it was all local products, really delicious. Thank you for a fabulous stay! We loved living like Counts and Countesses for a week! Henri's wine is fab too!

A lovely place to stay that more than lived up to the pictures and the description. Nicely situated for all sorts of day trips to the interesting sites in the region and always a pleasure to return "home" at the end of the day and be able to prepare dinner in the immense kitchen and enjoy it either in the kitchen, the classic dining room or even outdoors in the shade of the castle overlooking the pool and the forested hillsides. Isolated in it's private domain, it's an incredibly calm and relaxing place to be with well maintained rooms and grounds. The owners were extremely hospitable and available to us and have an excellent knowledge of the region and had excellent advice on places to go and things to see.
