Marvel at Villa Tremezzo, a neoclassical wedding-cake villa from the Belle Epoque. This stunning ochre-hued mansion on the shores of Lake Como, built in the 1500s, accommodates up to 12 guests and boasts Tiepolo-school frescoes, intricate marbled floors, sumptuous bedrooms, and extravagant grounds.
Passing through gilt-trimmed, wrought-iron gates and down the sweeping drive lined with cypress, laurel and chestnut trees, Villa Tremezzo greets its guests as the epitome of splendour and Italian elegance. The first thing visitors will notice is the villa’s astounding symmetry, from the formal parterre garden to the ice-blue shutters and tiered façade.
The ground floor begins with the central lobby where frescoes recount Virgil’s Aeneid and fauteuil chairs turn corners into comfortable nooks. In one direction guests will find a dream-like drawing room, in the other a romantic dining room with rose-clad Murano chandelier. Villa Tremezzo comes with its own butler and private chef, meaning breakfasts, lunches and dinners can be prepared on site and served up in the spectacular dining room or at either of the two al fresco dining spaces.
A grand central staircase climbs past views of the pool and gardens as it sweeps up to the second floor. Here guests will find three parlour rooms, each opulently decorated and boasting marble balconies overlooking unbeatable views of the lake across to Bellagio. These breathtaking spaces ensure plenty of room for celebrations and spending quality time with family and friends.
The Enlightenment poet Giuseppe Parini once referred to this villa as ‘La Quiete’ (the Calm), and the bedrooms show why. These six suites, situated in the villa’s wings, are each as spacious as they are sumptuous with lavish decorations and opulent ensuite bathrooms. From refined dark-wood furniture, damask wallpaper, and velvet headboards, to gilt-framed mirrors, regal armchairs, and time-worn parquet floors, the bedrooms are brimming with individual character and historical sophistication.
Stepping outside, the meticulously landscaped gardens envelop the villa, offering an oasis of serenity. The outdoor terrace, adorned with comfortable seating, presents an ideal setting for al fresco dining or simply savouring the breathtaking sunset over Lake Como. Behind the villa, set on a sloping lawn between snaking paths, guests will find a beautiful swimming pool surrounded by deck chairs, sun beds, and more landscaped gardens.
Villa Tremezzo has never been just a mere residence; it's an immersive experience, where the charm of Lake Como is seamlessly woven into the fabric of your stay. Each room, with its unique character and thoughtful design, contributes to an unforgettable holiday, creating lasting memories in the lap of Italian elegance.
Granted, after Villa Tremezzo takes your breath away you might need some time to relax before you head back out to explore Lake Como. What is more, few places in Italy are more synonymous with the art of dolce far niete (the sweetness of doing nothing), so if you’d rather stay within the sumptuous grounds of the villa you can hardly be blamed.
Nevertheless, Villa Tremezzo is extraordinarily situated on the shores of Lake Como, a short drive from the nearby villages of Lenno and Menaggio, and just a short stroll from the lovely village of Tremezzina.
Movie fans will be giddy to see some of the neighbours, including Villa Balbianello where scenes from Star Wars: Episode II and Casino Royale were filmed. You may not see the Clooneys (whose villa in Lagio isn’t open to the public), but you’re sure to experience why the rich and famous are still drawn to this piece of paradise. Lake Como has been a sanctuary for aristocrats and the idle rich since Roman times, and a boasts many artistic and cultural gems. Perhaps the best way to see the lake and its glamorous surrounds is by boat. The villa’s personal butler is happy to organise private trips to tour the lake or pop across to nearby Bellagio. Saunter down the Francesco Bernardini Ferrari designed sycamore-shaded steps to the villa’s private mooring to take a trip out on the lake.
And when it comes to history, the villa itself possesses a decent portion of it! Indeed, the upper floor of the villa is preserved as a museum, boasting a rare collection of Stradivarius violins and some belongings of Napoleon Bonaparte, including a hat and a bed in which the 19th century emperor and Josephine slept. Access to the museum can be made available to guests on request.
