Packhorse Shepherd's Hut in Belper offers a peaceful and private retreat with friendly owners and a rustic charm. Guests appreciate the tranquil location, cosy bed, and the opportunity for lovely walks, with some enjoying the added festive touches during Christmas. While some guests found the hut to be a delightful escape, others noted areas for improvement.
Cleanliness received mixed reviews, with several guests reporting issues such as dust, cobwebs, and suspect marks, suggesting a need for more thorough cleaning. However, some guests did not raise cleanliness as a concern.
The location is highly praised for its peace, tranquillity, and scenic walks, with a nearby woodland and a quiet site. The presence of a permanently closed pub was noted, but did not detract significantly from the overall positive feedback on location.
Comfort had varied feedback. While many guests found the bed comfortable and the hut cosy, others mentioned an uncomfortable bed and issues with shower temperature control.
Facilities and maintenance comments were mixed. Guests enjoyed the balcony and the hut's clever design, but some reported issues with the fridge, shower, and general maintenance. The basic cooking facilities met expectations for the hut's size.
While some guests mentioned thoughtful touches like Christmas decorations, wine, and chocolates, there is not enough information to determine if such gestures are consistent or to be expected, hence the score cannot be provided.

. I had read some negative reviews. Packhorse Shepherds hut is just what I wanted. It was clean, comfortable, the water was hot and everything worked. I stayed on my own with my dog and we had a great time. The owners asked if everything was OK ( it was) and made me feel very welcome. I would definitely recommend this, it is a very peaceful place to stay. Brilliant location. I left feeling like I had, had a proper holiday. Thank you.

Sadly the earlier complaints had not been addressed. There were cobwebs in the corners of the inside, the towels and tea towel did not smell nice at all. The bedding was old and did not smell clean at all. We struggled with the shower as difficult to control the temperature and the water pressure was poor, not enough for 2 people. The deck area had not seen any maintenance for who knows how long, it needs a good jet wash and a fresh coat of paint. There is no where to hang your clothes, there were only 2 pint beer glasses and one wine glass, we had to buy some tumblers. The fridge is in a shed at back of hut. With a bit of cash spent on a good clean, new bedding, curtains that are actual curtains, a jet wash, a fresh deck paint it could be lovely. We left after 2 nights as I couldnât stay in a bed that felt so unclean. Sykes were very efficient at dealing with our concerns and speaking to owners but as we did not speak with owners directly to give them an opportunity to resolve we cannot have any refund. Nothing could have been resolved whilst we were in the property so there felt little point. I do hope therefore that they spend the 438 pounds we lost on improving the areas we and others have highlighted and as our complaint was âresolvedâ by Sykes I would expect never to see another bad review here again. On a positive note the site for campers was quiet, the area lovely, peaceful and scenic.

However there was no need. I was made very welcome by Katherine and her husband. The shepherds hut is very private. Yes it is basic accommodation, but has a lot of charm and has been made as comfortable as possible. The bed was clean and very comfortable. The shower was a bit slow but did the job. Cooking facilities were limited but I had no intention of cooking anyway. There is a kettle, toaster and microwave which was all I needed. The fridge was in an outbuilding behind the hut, which I can see in poor weather could be inconvenient, but was fine with me. The decking could probably do with a coat of paint, but that for me was part of the rustic charm. The surroundings are perfect- lovely field for my you g dog, lovely walks around the fishing lake and woods. The resident goats were a joy. If you are looking for a break with rustic charm and to get back to nature, I would highly recommend the shepherds hut. If I had a criticism it would be that Sykes need to update their information- there is no Wi-Fi, which didnât bother me, and tell people about the outdoor fridge.
