Nestled between the towns of Ripley and Belper lies the charming village of Heage, Derbyshire. This scattered village is divided into two parts, Heage and Nether Heage, both home to rustic cottages and quaint lanes but neither possessing a centre. The name 'Heage' is Anglo-Saxon, meaning sublime or high and is fitting considering the hilly backdrop and greenery. The land has a rich history of farming and this is evident with its ancient farmhouses and working farms today, as well as the historic Morley Park, which was previously a coal mining and ironworks major setting. Within easy reach is the stunning reservoir of Carsington Water, the spectacular Grade II Riber Castle and Cromford Mills for a guided tour around a 1800s water-powered cotton mill. The friendly village of Heage is also a fantastic base for exploring the wonderful Peak District National Park and the glorious Sherwood Forest.

We particularly enjoyed the peace and quiet and being able to explore the extensive grounds making it possible to do a good walk straight from the doorstep. We also enjoyed some excellent eating places close by and it is an excellent gateway to the Peak District.

13th - 20th September. We enjoyed a relaxing stay in the idyllic surroundings of the barn, alternating with days out to some nearby attractions. The barn had everything we needed and we felt very much at home there in its 14 acres. Our host, Val, was extremely friendly and helpful. She gave us information about the barn and the local area. Thanks Val. We can recommend a visit to the nearby Crich Tramway Museum and the National Trust Workhouse & Infirmary in Southwell. The scenery local to the barn is also outstanding. Two restaurants we visited were the Tom Yum Thai in Belper, under the mill and the nearby Anila Indian restaurant. Both served excellent food.
