Guests say

Barn Cottage in Cockermouth is highly praised for its comfort, high standard of facilities, and excellent location, offering easy access to the Northern Lakes and Keswick. Guests appreciate the well-equipped kitchen, quality furnishings, and the idyllic, rural setting. The cosy garden and clean interiors add to the charm, although minor maintenance issues and a lack of welcome gifts are noted.

The cottage generally receives positive remarks for cleanliness, with guests finding it fresh and clean. However, there are isolated comments about fluff on the settee and a dirty floor area near the sink, suggesting room for improvement.

The location is consistently lauded for being convenient for lake access and close to Keswick, while still feeling rural and peaceful. It's an ideal base for exploring the Northern Lakes.

Guests find the cottage comfortable, with cosy furnishings and a lovely garden. The only discomfort mentioned is the noise from the dining chairs on the floor, which could be easily remedied.

The property is well-appointed with quality kitchenware and fixtures. However, there are reports of minor maintenance issues like a cracked mug, a chipped glass, and a loose electric socket, which slightly detract from the overall high standard.

While guests do not mention gifts, there is a suggestion that a welcome tray with tea, coffee, or milk would have been a nice gesture. As there are no specific references to gifts being provided or expected, a score cannot be given.

About this property

Barn Cottage sits at the northern tip of Bassenthwaite Lake, just ten minutes' drive from Keswick and shares the space on The Ruddings Farm with Bassenthwaite Ospreys and the Lakes Distillery.

The front door opens directly to the welcoming open plan living and dining space, with cosy log burning stove and TV, dining table area, and handmade oak kitchen with granite worktops and quality appliances. There is a washer/dryer within the airing cupboard in the shower room and a separate WC with basin is also on the ground floor. The master bedroom has been cleverly created on the mezzanine above the living area, with beautiful original oak beams (tall people need to duck!) and second bedroom and family shower room are on the ground floor. To the rear of the cottage there is a small enclosed garden with table and seating for al fresco drinks. To the front of the cottage there are views across the valley to Skiddaw that dominates the skyline.

With a great choice of walks from the door, easy access to the high fells that dominate the northern Lakes, or just a lakeshore wander, a great choice of local pubs and places to eat in the area and the market towns of Keswick and Cockermouth both within fifteen minutes' drive there is plenty to see and do and an array of beautiful scenery waiting to be explored. 2 minutes’ walk away is the award-wining Lake Distillery? why not pop along and sample some of the amazing range of spirits on offer and dine in the popular bistro. Nearby you can view the Lakes Ospreys and visit Alpacaly Ever After – a fabulous and fun family experience where you can walk with rehomed alpacas and llamas.

The small country market town of Cockermouth is situated in the quiet north-western part of the Lake District, a largely undiscovered and unspoilt area, yet only 13 miles from Keswick. The town is famous as the birthplace of both William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame) and Wordsworth’s Georgian family home, on the main street, is now a popular visitor attraction, owned by the National Trust. Cockermouth offers a good variety of shops, pubs and places to eat, but (of course) the main attraction of the area is the beautiful scenery and excellent walking in the northern lakes – Bassenthwaite Lake, Ennerdale Water and Derwent Water.

Cupboard with SPARE items was empty ( apart from hair drier) so no spare toilet paper. I object to be asked to replace the spare roll for next guests surely owners responsibility to equip cottage. Despite previous guest comment about mop & bucket in wardrobe it was still there! For a 4 person cottage sad lack of coat hangers, none in mop wardrobe. No kitchen roll. Many cottages have welcome tray but here no milk, teabags, coffee etc, would have been nice gesture for those arriving after long journey.

Lovely little garden out the back, comfortable furniture, everything worked. Couldn’t fault it.

and within 15 mins drive of Keswick. The cottage is equipped to a very high standard. The only thing that could improve this cottage would be an upstairs WC. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our time here and will definitely return. Highly recommended.
