About this property

Gardeners Cottage is a charming, pet-friendly retreat in the picturesque rural village of Bootle near Waberthwaite, Cumbria. Boasting a luxurious (shared) hot tub and a fun-filled games room, this is the perfect destination for a relaxing and entertaining getaway for families and friends. Set in four acres of gardens, attached to the owners Victorian house, this stunning house was originally the watermill dating back to 1700, with the River Annas flowing through the grounds. Inside you'll find an open-plan space designed for you to relax on the sofa as you warm up by the woodburning stove and watch a film, prepare a meal in the fully-equipped kitchen and enjoy it around the dining table. At the end of the day, climb the stairs with double bed and shower room. Enjoy the large garden which has space for badminton on the front lawn, paddling and fishing with nets in the river and a barbecue is available for guests to use. There is also a small games room in the garden with table football and table tennis. The garden area surrounding the cottage is fenced off to stop children wandering too far but care should be taken to supervise children at all times due to the proximity of the river. Explore the local village and stock up on essentials at the village store, stop for breakfast at the café and have a delicious meal at the pub. The award-winning beach at Silecroft is just a short drive, where you can find a lovely inn, pony trekking and a 9-hole golf course. To travel further afield, you can embark on the West Coast railway line at Bootle Station and travel up the coast to Ravenglass, where you can hop on-board the Ravenglass & Eskdale narrow gauge railway, which will take you up the Eskdale Valley to the foot of Scafell. As well as the trekking centre in Silecroft, there is also a wonderful opportunity to visit the Cumbrian Heavy Horse Centre and participate on a ride over the fells on a Clydesdale, Shire or Ardennes horse. Gardeners Cottage is perfect place to stay at any time of the year.

The small hamlet of Waberthwaite is situated on the West Coast of Cumbria within the Lake District National Park, comprising of a scattering of cottages, farm dwellings and a traditional village pub. Waberthwaite enjoys an enviable position amidst some of the most beautiful countryside in Britain and is situated close to local beaches, coastal walks and many of the nearby conservation areas. The local skyline is dominated by the towering peaks of Scafell, Great Gable, Hard Knott, Harter Fell and Muncaster Fell and nearby the stunning valleys of Eskdale and Dunnerdale provide breathtaking and ever-changing scenery to be enjoyed throughout the year. Everything was perfect.

. gardeners cottage was cosy with an excellent wood burning stove & unlimited free supply of firewood. An adequate shower & plenty of hot water. The wood burning hot tub was excellent, in a lovely sun trap ..once again the wood supply seemed unlimited! The 4 acres of grounds were beautiful & our dog loved it! What must be said is that the new host Danielle began taking things in hand during our stay & was very helpful. Not so good… In the cottage many of the facilities are a bit dated & grubby in places. The settee.. although comfortable was a little old & saggy. The grounds, although potentially beautiful, needed some overhauling & a good clean up! The walk to the hot tub was a bit of a challenge ( some 50 yards over uneven stepping stones ) All in all it has to be said we thoroughly enjoyed our stay..this place has the potential to be wonderful & we are sure that now Danielle is on the case.. this will happen.

The front door and windows were open, and this did nothing to lose the smell; which stayed with us the full week! The cooker and oven were dirty. Near the oven door on the cupboard next to it, was a big scorch mark, given time will catch fire. Unfortunately we did not use it, which meant having to eat out, which we did not budget for, hence booking a place which we could cook in was a given. The worktop was sticky to touch, despite it being wiped by myself daily. We had no running hot water throughout our stay, and had to boil a kettle to wash the few pots we used. The fridge was clean. The bathroom needs a deep clean. There was mould on the seal, and between the tiles. There was someone else's hair near the shower unit and their used scrunchy. The towel's did not smell freshly laundered and were very thin. No running hot water from the sink tap in the bathroom. The beds need either replacing or a mattress topper put on top of them. There were black bits/things on the scatter cushions and the previous tenants tissues under one of the single beds. Again the bedding did not smell like it had been freshly laundered. The carpets were thread-bare in places, with stains scattered around the upstairs carpets. The paint work had a thick layer of dust and felt sticky and grimy to touch. If my child had, had his way we would not have stayed the first night, and just returned home the same day we arrived. I have asked the owner for half of the fee I paid to be reimbursement if not the full payment. The owner gives himself 11-3 to do a turnaround between visitors, and works a job as well, this clearly is not enough time to clean the cottage and the hot tub. Can you please request a full refund, I do have photos to support my review.
