High Dow Crag makes the perfect base to get away and enjoy the great outdoors with many walks from the front door. Coniston village can be reached on foot within 20 minutes along the disused railway track and for a round trip return along the lake shore path. A Coniston holiday cottage takes you away from the hustle and bustle of Bowness and Lake Windermere, to a wilder landscape full of adventure. Coniston Water is famous for its part in Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons, with Peel Island being the setting for the 'Wild Cat Island' featured in the story. The lake is also known for Donald Campbell's water speed record attempt in 'Bluebird'. But the real magic comes from the breath-taking surroundings; dramatic fells including Coniston Old Man, wild woodlands and wonderful Lake District walks. You'll have access to no end of stunning routes, from leisurely strolls to challenging ascents. You'll enjoy access to the peaceful village centre, well equipped for stocking up the kitchen with traditional butcher, artisan bakery and supermarket. There are lovely tea rooms, cafes and traditional Lakeland pubs in Coniston village, and the Black Bull Inn is well worth a visit for its award-winning brewery the Coniston Brewing Co.
Nestling at the head of Coniston Water, the pretty village of Coniston is surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in the Lake District National Park, making it a superb base for touring, with Hawkshead, Ambleside, Windermere and Grasmere just a short drive away. Superb walking, mountain biking and climbing are available locally on Coniston Old Man and Wetherlam, and the lovely woodland trails at Grizedale Forest. For watersports enthusiasts, the quiet lake is ideal for dinghy sailing and canoeing, whilst the less active can enjoy a leisure cruise on the beautiful steam yacht 'Gondola’, or visit Brantwood, the former home of John Ruskin. Nearby attractions include the award-winning village of Hawkshead, home of the Beatrix Potter Gallery, Tarn Hows, one of the most visited beauty spots in the country and Esthwaite Water, famous for its fishing. The entrance is on a bend in the road, so getting out, either on foot or in the car, was a bit treacherous. For walking, though, once we got to the footpath just down the road, it was great for getting into Coniston along the old railway bed and then back along the lake. It's a good location for lots of walks from the door and the owners provided plenty of maps and information which we appreciated. Our only other slight issue was that the noise insulation wasn't brilliant - we could hear talking, snoring and the bathroom fan from the apartment below which did disturb our sleep a couple of nights (presumably our walking around, talking etc could also have disturbed the people downstairs), so earplugs are advised if you're noise sensitive. Otherwise, we had a lovely stay doing lots of walking, visiting Brantwood on a boat trip round the lake, and enjoying the views, interspersed with coffee and cakes in the Bluebird Cafe. On our one rainy day we enjoyed doing the jigsaw puzzle and playing Scrabble, which were also provided in the apartment. Overall a lovely week.

The cottage was cosy, clean and well equipped. Also in an ideal spot to do lots of walking, only a mile down the disused railway line to Coniston, where there are trails galore. With a bath to come back to, to relax and drink the complimentary prosecco. Would definitely recommend, and we will be returning in the future.
