About this property

The contemporary and the rustic blend seamlessly in this tastefully converted Lakeland barn. Abbots Reading Mews 2 is the ideal country retreat for a couple, and enjoys delightful wooded gardens along with a special location between Lake Windermere and Coniston Water in lovely South Lakes countryside. Forget those everyday cares in your own Lakeland hideaway!

Step into an older world at Abbots Reading, where life seems that little bit slower and simpler! Nature is all around you, and deer and other wild animals are regular visitors. The sympathetically converted barn is part of a pretty courtyard, with natural woodlands and ponds beyond, and is a lovely place to spend your Lakelovers holiday.

Despite the sleepy setting there is plenty to do here. Romantic strolls amongst the woods and green rolling landscapes all around you and days out on the steamers that cruise Lake Windermere from Lakeside pier will make your break special. We suggest, too, a visit to the Swan Hotel beside the river at Newby Bridge for some great food and relaxation in the excellent spa facilities, and a romantic journey into the Levens Valley on the vintage steam trains that run on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway.

Back home, the romantic bedroom is both stylish and comfortable, and convenient, too, with its en-suite bath and power shower room. You will certainly enjoy those lazy mornings here spent watching television on the wall-mounted flatscreen. The vaulted, oak-beamed open-plan living/dining/kitchen space is charming and characterful, with all you need to pamper yourselves during your time away!

If you are travelling to the Lake District with friends or extended family, but you would still like your own space, how about booking 2, 3 or all 4 of the Abbots Reading cottages. Set on the southern shores of Lake Windermere, the small, sleepy hamlet of Lakeside offers a peaceful getaway location, hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the Lake District’s popular attractions, but still within easy reach of them. Whether you decide to discover the area in the car, by foot, bike, boat or steam, there’s plenty to see nearby to keep the whole family content. The ferry dock offers the chance to travel by boat to Waterhead or Bowness, or take a shorter trip to the National Trust’s Fell Foot Park, across the water, which offers pretty grounds set alongside the very tip of the lake, providing plenty of places for picnics, paddling, games and gentle strolls on sunny afternoons. Situated alongside the Lakeside Station is the long-standing Lakeside and Haverwaithe Railway, home to Britain’s oldest standard gauge steam engine, on which you can travel back in time along this well-loved Heritage line, and where little ones will delight in meeting Thomas and his friends. Visit the Lakes Aquarium to uncover the often-secretive world of life below water, where you’ll chance upon hundreds of captivating creatures that feature in the surrounding rivers, lakes and sea. There are wonderful, well-signed walks to be enjoyed in the immediate area, including the 5-mile route to Finsthwaite’s High Dam, which trails from Lakeside through pleasant woodlands and meadows. Lakeside offers an exclusive holiday location with all of the Lake District’s delights at your fingertips.

Very clean. Two good pubs within a short drive. Pillows too hard for us, I'd take my own next time! Also bed is a double not king size, so very cosy. Would definitely go back.

I’ve been using Sykes for 9 years now so always have trust in them. The cottage itself is in a lovely location, grounds are lovely and the farmer next door is a welcoming man! Just very basic inside unfortunately. First cottage I’ve come to where we didn’t have a little welcome pint of milk/ treat etc waiting as a thank you and hello for the cost you pay, each to their own on how they welcome guests but after a 270mile 7hour traffic filled car journey, it was a little upsetting that this wasn’t there as then we needed to go back out to get a pint of milk.. We had 5 hangers in the very large wardrobe, it has been brought up over past comments but it’s not been sorted a minimum of 10-15 hangers should be in there. The WiFi wasn’t the best- although states a stone cottage and the routers is far from the signal etc this day and age there are ways of getting a strong connection with plug in signal extenders so had to drive /walk half way up the road to get signal to then plan our day. Also the bed is extremely uncomfortable, I had a spring pop into my side one night and had to spend the rest of the week on the sofa with a towel as a cover. The room is huge so could easily fit a king size bed too with a good thick topper. We had window cleaners on the Thursday early morning which isn’t the best when walking around after just showering and no warning from the cottage owner. Quite a shame as the cottage and service could be wonderful if a little thought and love went into their business. The little things make such a difference

This was our second stay at this lovely cottage. The cottage is very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The location is perfect. Very peaceful and many locations just a short drive away. The owners are very helpful, many thanks Mark & Louise. Parking is plentiful and some great walks from the cottage. We would highly recommend staying at this cottage. We were lucky as we had 4 brilliant days of sun and found a fantastic pub The Masons Arms at Strawberry Bank which is about a 15 minute drive with stunning views. Would we stay here again, most definitely. Thanks for a great stay, Derek & Wendy, Byron and Bailey . PS: Also kudos to Sykes Cottages. Booking process very easy with all the necessary correspondence via emails making everything extremely easy.
