Snaptrip says

Birch Knoll is a well-located cottage in Ambleside, praised for its proximity to local attractions and scenic views. Guests appreciate the property's warmth and the private garden, though some noted issues with cleanliness and maintenance. The lack of Wi-Fi and modern amenities like a dishwasher were mentioned, but the property's charm and location often compensated for these shortcomings.

Guests that stayed at this property said

Cleanliness received mixed reviews, with some guests finding the property clean and comfortable, while others reported issues with dust, spiders, and general upkeep. The inconsistency leads to a slightly above-average score.

The location is highly praised for its convenience to Ambleside town centre, the lake, and local walks. The property's setting offers lovely views and easy access to attractions, warranting a high score.

Comfort is generally well-regarded, with guests finding the sitting room and property warm and pleasant. However, some discomfort with the bed and noise from the main road slightly lowers the score.

Facilities are adequate, with a well-equipped kitchen and useful garage space. However, the absence of Wi-Fi, a dishwasher, and issues with parking and TV reception affect the score negatively.

There is no consistent mention of gifts or special touches that would indicate thoughtfulness. While some guests suggested the addition of tea, coffee, and milk, it is not clear if these are typically provided, so a score cannot be given.

About this property

A few minutes’ walk from the centre of Ambleside, this cosy bungalow is the perfect Lake District base for a small family or two couples sharing. Waterhead Pier is on the doorstep, from where Windermere Lake Cruises cross regularly for Bowness and Lakeside, whilst historic Grasmere and the picturesque village of Hawkshead are both within easy reach. For stocking up on groceries, the award-winning Booths supermarket is in nearby Windermere where guests can also browse the many independent shops, restaurants and bars.

Birch Knoll has an especially pretty garden, perfect for enjoying the views or reading the morning papers over coffee or a laze holiday brunch. There is parking for one car, while the garage provides safe storage for bikes and other outdoor equipment. Once inside, guests will appreciate the bright, well-planned space and superbly comfortable furnishings. Recently refurbished, the stylish kitchen is equipped with everything needed to make this a home-from-home. The two bedrooms are tastefully furnished and offer lovely views. A smart bathroom with shower over the bath completes the accommodation.

Ambleside itself is a lively village with two independent cinemas, tearooms, fine restaurants and interesting shops around every corner. Whether guests are planning a holiday filled with energetic outdoor activities or looking for a more laid-back break, this is a wonderful spot in which to spend a special time together.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

Very warm and comfortable, well furnished and beautifully decorated. The gardens were beautiful too and very private. The drive is fairly small - we have a Mini, so it wasn't a problem, but anything bigger would struggle! Will definitely return.

We were attending our sailing club annual "Windermere Week" with our dinghy's launched and moored next to the steamer pier - so very close to. I have reduced my "mark" for Facilities only because I find an "over bath" shower difficult to use owing to a knee problem - otherwise every thing was good and comfortable. Thanks' Brian.

All the comforts of home which proved invaluable when half way through holiday I had to attend Urgent Care in Kendal and spend rest of stay on bed rest. The family carried on and visited all the places we had planned Hill Top, Steam Yacht Gondola, Stagshaw Gardens, Stockghyll Force, Skelghyll Woods and not forgetting the pleasant amble along Borrons Road to the lake and pier at Waterhead with its lovely pubs and waterside cafes. Birch Knoll in our case proved to be fit for all purposes and I hope I will be able to return in the future and finish the holiday I started.
