About this property

Resting in the centre of Hawkshead is a charming, detached bungalow, Curlew Cottage. Located in a private cul-de-sac, Curlew Cottage offers a wonderful base for four guests, ideal for couples, families, and friends, looking to explore the delights of the Lake District National Park. The home has a host of features including a homely sitting room, two well-presented bedrooms, one with en suite facilities, a relaxing family bathroom and a well-equipped kitchen/diner to make some lovely meals. There are beautiful gardens at both the front and rear of the property meaning you can relax with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Keen walkers will be spoilt for choice with an abundance of trails and fells right on the doorstep, whilst for cyclists, the cottage is in close proximity to Grizedale Forest and of course Windermere and Coniston provide a great place for a little fun on the water. Hawkshead village itself has a fascinating literary history to investigate, perhaps while enjoying a drink in one of the excellent local pubs. It's famously associated with William Wordsworth who attended school in the village and Beatrix Potter where today the National Trust exhibits her original artwork in the old offices of Beatrix's husband William Heelis. Around the market square there is a delightful array of shops and cafes and with four pubs in the village there is a great choice of places to eat and drink. Curlew Cottage is the perfect base from which to discover all this and experience a memorable holiday.

The picturesque village of Hawkshead still retains the charm and character that so endeared it to its most famous residents - William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. Visitors can wander the wealth of tiny alleyways, thoroughfares, archways and courtyards between the whitewashed 17th century houses. There are many pleasant inns, teashops, guest houses and gift shops in the village, as well as the Beatrix Potter Gallery, which houses an annually changing exhibition of the famous author’s illustrations and stories. The other famous Hawkshead enthusiast, William Wordsworth, attended the Old Grammar School in 1779-87, which still stands today, and you can visit the building where the Lakeland poet developed his love of the form, and even see the desk into which he scratched his name as a small boy! Newby Bridge is ten miles away and offers attractions such as the Aquarium of the Lakes and Windermere Lake Cruises, sailing daily between Ambleside, Bowness and Lakeside. With stunning scenery and numerous attractions within easy touring distance, Hawkshead is in an ideal location at any time of the year.

Wonderful large fluffy bath towels! Just a couple of points the owners may find helpful - a mirror in the double bedroom is, in my view, essential as leads from hot brushes etc will not reach from the nearest plug to allow you to see into the en-suite mirror. It doesn't need to be big, but flat against the wall, similar that in the en-suite,, the left would be great. Also, two smaller saucepans, as there are only two large ones at present. Finally, although the garden is obviously a work in progress, the step up to the doors from the kitchen should be filled in underneath. We all caught our feet under it at least once, and one time wearing sandals resulting in a cut toe. I left a gilet behind, but it's not worth sending on to me, it was a lucky find in a charity shop and perhaps it could end up in one again. Nothing nasty in the pockets, just crumpled tissues I think.

A few areas of The Bungalow are a bit worn, but we had a great stay. Great location for travelling around the Lakes.
