Ghyll Heights is a well-situated cottage in Ambleside, appreciated for its spaciousness, luxurious bedrooms, and well-equipped kitchen. Guests enjoy the proximity to town and natural attractions, despite a steep return walk. The property's charm is enhanced by its quiet location and the sound of nearby waterfalls.
Cleanliness has been a concern with several guests noting issues, including a musty smell and dust in certain areas. However, some guests found the property to be clean and tidy, indicating inconsistency in cleaning standards.
The location is highly praised for its proximity to Ambleside and local attractions, with the caveat that the steep walk may not suit everyone. The picturesque setting next to a stream adds to the appeal.
Guests find the beds extremely comfortable and the living spaces cosy. Some discomfort was noted due to a musty smell in lower areas and the condition of the sofas.
The property is well-equipped with kitchen amenities and comfortable furnishings. However, there are repeated mentions of maintenance issues such as a non-functional balcony and a damp smell in the lower bedroom.
While some guests mentioned a small welcome pack, there is insufficient information to determine the consistency of such gestures. Therefore, it cannot be guaranteed that guests will receive these thoughtful touches.
This modern riverside cottage, part of the contemporary Falls development, stands alongside Stockghyll Waterfalls and enjoys fabulous views from its own private balcony. The property is just minutes from the heart of vibrant Ambleside with its host of restaurants, outdoor shops and boutiques. Zeffirellis cinema, pizzeria and jazz bar is a treat not to be missed, and the adorable house on the bridge offers a lovely photo opportunity.
A short stroll from the village and you will reach Waterhead and Lake Windermere. Guests cannot miss the opportunity to take a cruise across the water to Bowness or Lakeside. The picturesque village of Hawkshead is a short drive away, with Hill Top and the Grizedale Forest a little further on. A car ferry crosses back to Bowness making the perfect route around the lake.
This property is beautifully presented and having two large bedrooms with private bathrooms, ideal for two couples sharing or a small family group. Ghyll Heights is arranged over three floors. On the lower floor is a lovely king size room and bathroom. A separate dressing room adds an element of luxury, and the outlook is charming. The entrance hall leads to the main living area and balcony with a view over the nearby waterfall. The kitchen is modern and well-equipped with everything needed to conjure up a hearty breakfast or evening meal. Upstairs again to the second of the two king size rooms with en-suite bathroom. Total privacy in a charming location.
Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

It was extremely cosy, comfortable and clean, and also very well equipped. It is just a short stroll down into Ambleside, and the cottage is in a scenic location by Stock Ghyll, with fell walks from the doorstep. We particularly enjoyed a walk to Grassmere along the âcoffin trailâ and Freshers Cafe in town. We will return!

4 star rating but, having read the reviews prior to our stay, we had some concerns. One of our main concerns related to repeated references to the poor standard of the cleanliness of the property. With great difficulty, we managed to speak to someone from Sykes in the week leading up to our stay, and we were assured that all issues had been dealt with. Upon arrival at Ghyll Heights, we were unpleasantly surprised to find the kitchen in an unacceptable state of cleanliness. This included sticky food on the front of the washing machine, food and drink spillages around the bin area, food and drink spillages on the dishwasher door and down the adjacent wall, cupboard shelves that needed cleaning before storing food, food scraps in the cutlery drawer, and rust and grime on the inside of the fridge door closing mechanism. In the dining area of the sitting room we found that the four dining chairs were in a very poor state, with tears in the fabric, various food stains on all four chairs and, on one chair, crusty food stuck down the side. We managed to speak to somebody at Sykes who told us that the owner uses a private cleaner and nothing could be done until the following day at the earliest. However, when we made a second call, we spoke to another member of the Sykes team who agreed that their own cleaners should come to sort out the issues. Two helpful members of the Sykes cleaning team did arrive that same afternoon and cleaned the kitchen and wiped down the chairs as best as they could. They obviously could not deal with the torn fabric but, after further pushing from ourselves, Sykes arranged for two of the chairs to be taken away and replacements provided. Given the ongoing issues with the cleanliness of this property, we would question its 4 star rating.
