Snaptrip says

Hideaway Cottage in Ambleside is praised for its quiet, tucked-away location, yet remains conveniently close to the town centre and local amenities. Guests appreciate the comfortable beds, powerful shower, and the cottage's cosy charm. While some guests mention issues with parking and suggest updates, the overall sentiment is positive, with many looking forward to returning.

Guests that stayed at this property said

Most guests found the cottage clean and comfortable. However, a few noted that certain areas could benefit from additional cleaning, such as the kitchen and living room. The majority of reviews did not raise cleanliness as a concern.

The location is highly praised for being central and convenient for shops, restaurants, and walks, yet quiet. Some guests had difficulty finding the property and suggested better instructions, but overall, the location is considered excellent.

Guests generally found the cottage comfortable, particularly noting the beds and the shower. Some mentioned the sloping bedroom floor and the tight staircase as minor discomforts. The living room lighting and seating were also noted for improvement.

The reviews provide mixed feedback on facilities. Positive remarks were made about the shower and internet connection, but there were several mentions of a need for modernisation and maintenance, such as the oven dials and lighting. Without a consistent consensus, it is challenging to provide a definitive score.

Guests have mixed feelings about the thoughtfulness of provisions. Some were disappointed by the lack of welcome treats and basic supplies, while others did not mention this aspect. It is politely noted that while some guests missed welcome gifts, these are not guaranteed.

About this property

This enchanting 18th century getaway rests in a quiet corner just off the bustling centre of Ambleside, in the heart of the Lake District. Arranged at the end of a short terrace of three, Hideaway Cottage has been refurbished to include all contemporary comforts for you to enjoy your holiday any time of year, whilst retaining its cosiness, character and charm, perfect for an escape as a couple, family or with friends. Slate steps lead down to the front south-facing entrance which will bring you into the sitting room, home to two sofas, a woodburning stove and TV. The kitchen is complete with fitted units and is a comforting place to prepare those home-cooked meals before sitting down at the nearby dining table. Climb the stairs to the first floor and discover the double bedroom with feature window seat and well-proportioned stylish bathroom with shower over bath, basin and WC. Another flight of stairs will bring you to a spacious twin room with character beams and striking views over Loughrigg Fell. For some fresh air, you can rest on the sunny and south-facing patio with a cold beverage or take the short walk into Ambleside for a coffee in one of the many cafés. England’s largest lake is at your fingertips, for cruises and water activities, while on land you can hike in scenery that sparked the imaginations of people like William Wordsworth. For dedicated walkers there are plenty of superb hiking routes from the doorstep, especially those up Loughrigg Fell and towards Rydal Cave, a former slate quarry above the southern shore of Rydal Water. Perhaps you would prefer a good old-fashioned cruise on a steamer, granting you uninterrupted views of Windermere’s fells and lakeside houses, without having to move a muscle? Further afield, you can visit the National Trust property Hill Top, walk the delightful Claife Heights or spend the day at the larger town of Kendal. At the end of your day, Hideaway Cottage will be waiting to welcome you back for a peaceful holiday at any time of year.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

Slightly smaller and darker accommodation than expected, perhaps our wishful thinking. The house is end terrace adjacent at rear to parking for a garage business and a workshop style semi-derelict lean-to, which is not clear from pictures in listing, though not a problem. The top floor bedroom ceiling is challenging for taller people. Living room sofas feel tired. Oven in kitchen was not clean and impossible to get clean. Oven does not work to temperature and burns food. Controls on oven not visible. Taps are quirky and take some getting used to. Bathroom basin cold tap loose. Bathroom would benefit from extractor fan. Hard to dry and hang coats and clothes in wet weather. Parking permit useful. Washing machine accessible behind a removable panel in the kitchen, works well. Fridge freezer, wifi and TV reliable and good. Hot water and heating good. Shower perhaps too powerful. With four of us, an extra toilet would have been handy (our lookout, ditto no dishwasher). We swept courtyard when we arrived, and vacuumed the house. Steps down to house are getting overgrown with vegetation at top; slippery in wet. One of the legs nearest the door of the double bed was loose and reinserted into its socket, but could come adrift. Lakelovers / Heart of the Lakes agency were helpful with fresh towels after a week. The house is very quiet considering you are surrounded by other houses more or less in the centre of town. We attended before school holidays started.

Doors which dident close broken catch, door wouldn’t open or close over carpet broken catch scratched my sisters arm and bled, towel rail kept dropping off, Indications in oven and hob unreadable Little things but makes a difference

Clean and comfortable but needs updating. Plastic flowers and strange ornaments were not good and downstairs which is quite small - felt a bit dark and dingy partly due to dark brown carpets and dark furniture. Ornaments and pictures need removing/ replacing - just needs a complete refresh - would make a world of difference
