The location is described as perfect, idyllic, and stunning, with beautiful views and proximity to local villages and amenities, making it an ideal base for exploring the Lake District.

The majority of guests found the cottage to be very comfortable, with cosy touches and good quality provisions. One guest mentioned uncomfortable pillows, but this seems to be an isolated view.

About this property

This single-storey barn conversion is situated on a working livestock farm, just under a mile from the picturesque village of Hawkshead and six miles from Ambleside. With spectacular views over the fields to the pretty Esthwaite Water, Shepherds Cottage is a firm favourite for couples or families at any time of the year. Enter this welcoming cottage and you will find a real gem as you discover the light and airy open-plan living area, which has feature beams and a delightful sitting area with tasteful fabric sofas, alongside a contemporary kitchen. Single-storey, Shepherds Cottage is just a short stroll at bedtime to reach the two bedrooms and the opulent shower room, where you will find many extra touches such as robes, slippers and toiletries, which have been generously supplied by the owner to ensure that your stay is nothing less than perfect. Outside, at the rear of the cottage, is a lovely patio area with your very own private hot tub, perfect for relaxing after a hard day's walking, whilst at the front is another patio which boasts fantastic views down to Esthwaite Water; an ideal spot to sit back and enjoy the peaceful and tranquil landscape. Esthwaite Water has been known to be frequented by osprey that have no doubt been attracted by the pike and trout in the lake, as are fishermen who can fish on the lake by arrangement with the owner. Just a short stroll will take you into the charming village of Hawkshead with its colourful mix of quaint, cobbled yards, whitewashed cottages and interesting shops and cafes to explore. The Grizedale Forest is on the doorstep and the Visitor Centre with the tree top adventure course a stone’s throw away. With beautiful paths right from the door leading you through Hawkshead towards Tarn Hows and the delightful Drunken Duck pub, Shepherds Cottage will be delightful at any time of year.

The picturesque village of Hawkshead still retains the charm and character that so endeared it to its most famous residents - William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. Visitors can wander the wealth of tiny alleyways, thoroughfares, archways and courtyards between the whitewashed 17th century houses. There are many pleasant inns, teashops, guest houses and gift shops in the village, as well as the Beatrix Potter Gallery, which houses an annually changing exhibition of the famous author’s illustrations and stories. The other famous Hawkshead enthusiast, William Wordsworth, attended the Old Grammar School in 1779-87, which still stands today, and you can visit the building where the Lakeland poet developed his love of the form, and even see the desk into which he scratched his name as a small boy! Newby Bridge is ten miles away and offers attractions such as the Aquarium of the Lakes and Windermere Lake Cruises, sailing daily between Ambleside, Bowness and Lakeside. With stunning scenery and numerous attractions within easy touring distance, Hawkshead is in an ideal location at any time of the year.

We didn’t feel the hot tub area was all that private with overlooking windows etc. so didn’t use it. Installing usb plug sockets next to the beds and also a usb socket in the lounge would be a great addition (no criticism just an suggestion). The driveway could benefit from infilling the ridges with gravel, fully understand this is working farm. All that said, great property and awesome location, we had a nice relaxing stay and would both recommend and return.

The hot tub was a very welcome addition after a long day in the hills. Great to be surrounded by the livestock too. The hosts were an absolutely delightful, as was the dog! Already looking at return dates.

We couldn't have asked for a better base for our Lakes holiday. The cottage was spotlessly clean, well equipped, and had the most comfortable beds! Watching the lambs outside was a joy, and although we didn't use the hot tub, this is a fab added extra to have available.
