About this property

Hawkshead 5.3 miles. Low Graythwaite Hall is a magnificent, 16th century residence set close to the southern shoreline of Lake Windermere in Graythwaite, just a short walk from the picturesque village of Hawkshead in Cumbria. Surrounded by four acres of stunning grounds, lawned gardens, topiarised trees, a pond and stream, this property is a dream destination for a large family of 24’s special celebration or holiday. Low Graythwaite’s grand entrance hall leads into the first of two splendid sitting rooms; sumptuous furnishings and a magnificent stone fireplace make this an extraordinary room in which to socialise and relax. Guests can spill over into an equally delightful, second sitting room with views out to the gorgeous grounds. The dining room that seats 24 is breath-taking with its oak paneling, feature fireplace and French windows opening out to the south facing patio and outdoor dining area; this room certainly has the wow factor! The large farmhouse kitchen/diner is guaranteed to be a hub of activity; warm, welcoming and superbly equipped, this is somewhere folk will linger and chat while supper simmers in the large Rangemaster oven. Through the side door, guests will find the aptly named Boot Room with plenty of drying space, a freezer and downstairs cloakroom. Two staircases lead up to the nine fabulous bedrooms, each with its own unique charm and character; with names like Catbells, Tethera, Grisedale and Cunsey, which will you choose? Six of the rooms have an en-suite bathroom or shower room, with an additional family bathroom; there are two rooms with four poster beds, two super-king-size rooms, four doubles and a twin. One of the super-king-size rooms can be made up as a twin if specified on booking, for added flexibility. The property enjoys the addition of The Old Dairy, a lovingly restored, traditional two-bedroom cottage providing quality accommodation. The Old Dairy is ideal for the extended family as it can accommodate up to four guests whilst offering bright and airy interiors. The living/dining room is a charming place to kick back and relax, with its open fire and leather seating taking centre stage. More tasty meals can be rustled up in this cottage’s well-equipped kitchen, which also boasts laundry facilities! Three enticing bedrooms, including two doubles and a twin, all enjoy shared access to the family bathroom, and complete the cottage’s accommodation. Be sure to spend some time exploring Low Graythwaite Hall’s amazing grounds or venture into the woodland, before retreating to the main house’s patio, or The Dairy’s own little suntrap, to unwind with a cold beverage in hand. The property enjoys a tranquil location, with a farm shop selling fresh produce settled a stone’s throw away, whilst the village of Hawkshead isn’t far and offers a range of amenities, including the friendly pub of The Queen’s Head. The village is full of cobbled streets and traditional Lakeland cottages; you’ll find a range of local shops and tearooms here, as well as access to a range of iconic walking trails, such as Tarn Hows. The surrounding landscape inspired Beatrix Potter, and her former home at Hill Top, Near Sawrey is well worth a visit, next door is the Tower Bank Arms, a traditional pub with stone-flagged floors, Lakeland ales and a roaring fire. Explore Grizedale Forest; a fabulous network of pathways, cycle tracks and sculpture trails, as well as Go-Ape; alternatively, Coniston, Bowness & Windermere are also within easy reach and all have watersports and activities for all ages. Low Graythwaite Hall is incredibly special, somewhere you and your loved ones will make memories that will last a lifetime.

Hawkshead is a lovely village which preserves the beauty and character that attracted it to its most renowned inhabitants, William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. The profusion of little passageways, thoroughfares, archways, and courtyards between the whitewashed 17th century buildings give this village that touch of charm which makes it so popular. The village has a number of charming inns, teashops, guest rooms, and gift shops, as well as the Beatrix Potter Gallery, which hosts a yearly rotating display of the famed author's paintings and tales.

It accommodated us all comfortably with plenty of room for people to find space when they needed it. The bath robes were a nice touch. A shower rather than bath in the shared bathroom would have been nice, but people ended up using each other's bathrooms when they wanted a shower. There was plenty of hot water at all times. The kitchen had enough of the things we needed, and it was great to have multiple kettles and coffeee makers. There was a lovely selection of very nice things in the welcome basket, which were much appreciated. The estate ofice was very helpful when we had any problems and responded very quickly. All in all everyone had a great holiday. There are some minor things that could be better- BBQ tools would be nice and some of the kitchen utensils are a bit worn, but not unusable. The only real issue we had was opening the doors. The door handles were stiff and because of the shape they were very dfficult to turn and the doors are very heavy. Several of us could not open the doors at all.

Would highly recommend and would love to go back again in the future. Stunning property with lawns, bbq, pool, large kitchen & lovely rooms. Near lake windermere so great walks, paddleboarding etc.

The rooms were beautiful especially the lounges where we sat with amazing lit fires and a glass of wine or two. The grounds were equally beautiful. An added bonus of use of the swimming pool nearby and a fun wood heated hot tub. The estate staff were so helpful and made us feel so welcome. An absolute gem and we can highly recommend.
