About this property

Housesteads is set in the village of Wark, adjacent to the River North Tyne in Northumberland, and is a delightful family-friendly and pet-friendly two-bedroom duplex. With off-road parking for one car, this property is positioned close to nearby shops and pubs and is the ideal base for family or friends looking to explore this area and the Northumberland National Park. Come inside and curl up on one of the sumptuous velvet sofas with a good book. Enjoy a board game with the family or watch a film on the Smart TV. Prepare supper in the large fully equipped kitchen with an electric oven and hob, fridge/freezer, and microwave, and sit down to enjoy a glass or two at the dining table while making plans for the holiday. At the end of the day climb the stairs to the well-presented double bedroom and smaller bunk room to catch your rest. Patio doors from the living area downstairs open out to a private fenced garden with access to the communal south-facing garden space with outdoor furniture and a firepit where you can enjoy a drink at the end of the day. A walk into the heart of Wark will bring you to the Premier Convenience or Wark Post Office, where you can stock up on homely essentials, as well as the Battlesteads Hotel & Restaurant, which serves up hearty pub grub for when you fancy taking a break from cooking. Just two minutes away you can discover what the dark night skies have to offer at the Battlesteads dark sky observatory. A brief car journey south of your lodgings will bring you to Hexham, where you can find the lush greens of Hexham Park, the Hexham Old Gaol Museum, as well as the Corbridge Roman Town. Alternatively, a car trip north will take you into the wonderful Kielder Forest Park, where you can embark on a hike through Hareshaw Linn Waterfall, roam the grounds of the Vindolanda, and even get up close and personal with birds of prey at the Falconry Days safari park. Whatever your age or ability you will never be short of things to do and see when you take your well-earned break at Housesteads.

Wark is a delightful village surrounded by beautiful unspoilt Northumbrian countryside, on the edge of the National Park. Wark offers much of interest, including shops, a gothic style church and good quality restaurants. Hadrian’s Wall and Housesteads Fort are nearby, whilst the market town of Hexham is a ten mile drive and is well worth a visit, with its narrow bustling streets, good selection of shops and a fascinating abbey boasting 15th century paintings and a fine Saxon crypt. The Border Country, Northumbrian coast, Kielder Forest with cycling and watersports, Beamish Open Air Museum and Durham Cathedral are all within easy motoring distance, while the Gateshead Metro Centre (one of the largest shopping centres in Europe) can be reached within an hour. Suitable for year-round holidays, this unspoilt area with its fishing, horse riding, abundant wildlife and superb walking country is a nature lover’s dream. Superb golf courses are close by and the area has abundant historical sites, stately homes and famous gardens.

The bedding is of high quality, furniture very comfortable and every room is airy and light. Great private shared garden and summer house. It's a very peaceful location and we slept soundly every night. Very handy too for dog walks and would recommend the river walk. Local facilities are scarce, but a hotel with bar, restaurant and beer garden is within walking distance and open to non residents. Food and beer very good.
