Some concerns were raised about maintenance issues and inaccuracies in the listing, but overall, the property offers a peaceful retreat with a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Guests find the cottage comfortable, with special mentions of the comfortable beds and the cosy atmosphere enhanced by a log burner. The spaciousness of the property contributes to the overall comfort level.

Facilities

The facilities are generally well-received, with a full-size fridge/freezer and a welcome gesture of tea, coffee, and biscuits. However, there are comments about missing cleaning tools, a broken bathroom doorknob, and issues with the smoke alarm, indicating room for improvement in maintenance.

About this property

Dovecote Cottage is a double fronted, brick built house sitting on the end of the Coach House Hotel on the outskirts of the village of Otterburn, Northumberland. It is located on the stunning grounds of the Grade II listed Otterburn Hall which dates back to 1870 with a vibrant history as a country retreat for Lord James Douglas. The cottage is situated in Northumberland National Park which was recognised as an International Dark Sky Park in 2013 and is Europe's largest area of protected night sky; it’s gold-tier awarded, pristine night’s sky offers guests the best place to enjoy the stars as they fill the sky above. Set over two floors, Dovecote Cottage offers a spacious interior for four guests looking to holiday in this part of Northumberland. Step through the front door into a small area with stairs directly in front and to the left sits a spacious sitting room, equipped with a plush settee, woodburning stove and TV with Freeview, providing a homely setup for unwinding. Move through to the kitchen, where you can conjure up a feast before congregating in the dining room, toasting to a much-needed Northumberland escape. Venture upstairs, where you’ll find a bedroom at either side of the landing, both featuring double beds in a neat presentation. Completing the interior is the family bathroom, providing a choice of bath and walk-in shower, so you can best decide how to prepare for the day. To the outside sits a rear garden, perfect for a drink and a catch-up on the day's events. Next door lies the owner’s Hotel, where you can dine in style at the restaurant and bar, or head into the village of Otterburn to enjoy a break from the kitchen at William de Percy and to stock up your cupboards at the local store. The village is also home to the Otterburn Mill where you can sample a traditional afternoon tea and a variety of walks including the Otterburn Village Trail and the idyllic Otterburn Hall Estate which provides an amazing chance to admire lakes, a waterfall and wildlife including red squirrels, deer and birds! The national park also offers opportunities to explore the ruins of Hadrian’s Wall, the National Landscape Discovery Centre of The Sill or chances to simply indulge in scenic splendour and breathtaking views. Just under ten miles away is the village of Bellingham, with the popular Bellingham Golf Club, the Bellingham Show and Country Festival drawing in visitors each year, and Hareshaw Linn Waterfall just on the outskirts. Further afield, the market of Alnwick has lots of offer, including The Alnwick Playhouse hosting a variety of performances and exhibitions, the glorious Castle that was featured in Harry Potter and the Alnwick Garden. Break away to Dovecote Cottage for a memorable Northumberland escape.

The charming village of Otterburn is nestled near to the banks of the River Rede, between the hills and moors overlooking the North Tyne Valley, and was once the scene of the illustrious Scots triumph over the English in 1388. It is on a number of well-traveled routes for bicycles and provides excellent options for walking. Nearby attractions include Hadrian's Wall, the lovely Kielder Forest and Waters, which offer wonderful opportunities for horseback riding, nature watching, and fishing in a stunning, serene setting. Otterburn had had a thriving weaving industry, and the village's past is commemorated by the internationally renowned Otterburn Mill. A popular 18-hole golf course is located in the nearby town of Bellingham, which was primarily constructed from local stone and slate. Bellingham also has a few bars, shops, and tea rooms. Visit the magnificent stately residences Wallington Hall and Cragside, which are close by, or the charming market town of Alnwick, which is only 40 minutes away and has a magnificent castle and gardens. Otterburn is an excellent destination for a restful vacation any time of year.
