Begin exploring the area by walking up to Pistyll Rhaeadr, you can set off from your doorstep and walk the full 8-mile round trip or park up a little closer, to take in the stunning natural beauty of this 240 ft waterfall. Visit Lake Vyrnwy and follow one of the trails around the lake for some beautiful scenery, enjoy some exciting watersports like canoeing, kayaking or windsurfing, or head to the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel to get a fishing permit for the lake and delight in catching wild brown, stocked brown and rainbow trout. Wales' largest natural lake, Bala Lake, is another fantastic location to enjoy, with wild swimming popular here and more trout fishing too. Discover the lovely market town of Oswestry over the border into England, visit the 300-year old Old Oswestry Hillfort, the Cambrian Heritage Railway, and if you're around on one of the market days then browse the indoor and outdoor markets with an eclectic mix of independent businesses and shops. The National Trust Powis Castle and Garden is not to be missed, an imposing stately home which houses an Indian collection and ornate interiors, it's a great day out. Be carried through the stunning Welsh countryside by the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway, riding on an historic locomotive, you'll feel as though you're travelling back in time.
