Ravenclaw Hall was once a school with 60 small boys and a number of staff living on site. It is now once again an elegant country mansion with room for 13 guests. Admittedly, some of the less interesting parts of the building were destroyed by fire many years ago but what remains is truly sumptuous. Set in the High Weald, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on the borders of Kent and Sussex, the house enjoys glorious views over miles of apparently empty countryside. There’s a swimming pool in the grounds and we played croquet on one of the lawn. We walked through a carpet of bluebells in the woods and before eating in the elegant dining room we enjoyed a log fire in the panelled drawing room. The billiard room and the ping pong room were popular after dinner. Some of the bedrooms are enormous and almost all have en-suite bathrooms. We revelled in their size and charm. Over half a century ago, I was one of those prep school boys. How wonderful to enjoy the beauty and elegance of my old school in its reincarnation as a magnificent country house.

I spent a long weekend at Ravenclaw Hall in March 2022 with a family group of 10 adults, ranging from 22 to 82. It simply could not have gone better. The rooms are all spacious and filled with exquisite antiques and paintings and the views and grounds were beautiful. We were lucky enough to have sunshine throughout, so enjoyed walks in the grounds and tennis, but also made the most of table tennis, snooker, chess and the piano in the evenings. We hardly needed to leave the place! I would highly recommend it.
