Guests generally appreciate the cottage's well-equipped kitchen, comfortable main bedroom, and the property's location suitable for exploring West Wight. The outdoor space and proximity to walking routes are also highlights. Some guests noted areas for improvement, including furniture comfort and maintenance, but overall experiences were positive, with special mention of a welcoming gesture from the owners.
The property is described as very clean, with exceptional cleanliness noted in the cooker and microwave, and spotless bed linen and towels. However, some guests mentioned cobwebs and a slight damp smell in one area, slightly lowering the score.
The location is highly praised for its quietness, suitability for walks, and convenience for exploring the local area. The proximity to a pub with great food and friendly staff is also appreciated, contributing to a high score.
The main bedroom is noted as very comfortable, but some guests found the sofas and other furniture to be worn or low, affecting the overall comfort level. A safety concern was raised regarding a step in the bedroom.
Facilities are generally well-regarded, especially the kitchen's array of utensils. However, points were deducted for maintenance issues like a noisy washing machine, worn furniture, and the need for better lighting in certain areas.
While guests appreciated the welcome card and gift, there is not enough information to assess the consistency of such gestures across all stays. Therefore, it is politely noted that such thoughtful touches, while appreciated, are not guaranteed.
This charmingly presented terraced cottage is situated within a picturesque mews, among a collection of converted barns, in the hamlet of Afton, near the village of Freshwater on the Isle of Wight AONB. Tastefully appointed throughout to provide light and contemporary accommodation, while maintaining some of its original charm, this Afton cottage is perfect for families wishing to enjoy the countryside, with the additional benefit of some of the best beaches on the Isle of Wight within easy reach. Set over two floors, you will find three bedrooms upstairs, all with exposed beams, Velux windows, and homely furnishings, along with a contemporary bathroom. Downstairs, this Freshwater cottage offers an open-plan living area with a well-equipped kitchen, a dining area and sitting area, which has leather seating for you to relax at the end of an eventful day. To the front of this cottage near Freshwater is a large lawned communal garden area, while to the rear there is a private enclosed patio area where you can dine alfresco on summer evenings. Afton boasts stunning bird life within its marshes and an extremely challenging links golf course, which offers striking views and breath-taking sunsets across the Channel. Just outside Afton is Tennyson Down, plus walks towards Tennyson monument while taking in the beautiful translucent seas and continue further to take in the sheer beauty of the famous Needles. Nearby beaches include the picturesque Compton Beach with plenty of rock pools and fossils to discover, and Alum Bay Pebble Beach, where you can follow the path or take a cable car to the shoreline. Elsewhere on the island, you'll find the coastal towns of Yarmouth, Cowes, and Ryde, whilst the must-see sights of Carisbrooke Castle, Newport Roman Villa, and the Isle of Wight coastal path are all within easy reach. This delightful Isle of Wight cottage can be enjoyed all year-round.
Freshwater consists of Freshwater Village and Freshwater Bay on the Isle of Wight. Freshwater village has small shops, cafes, and the West Wight Sports Centre and Indoor Pool. Freshwater Bay and nearby Compton Bay are known for their high chalk cliffs, rolling downs, and lovely beaches. Freshwater Bay Golf Club, which overlooks the English Channel, offers a superb day out for golfers of all abilities, while the area is a haven for birdwatchers, cyclists, and walkers with many wonderful walks to be enjoyed not only on West Wight but across the entire Isle of Wight's varied island landscape. Afton Down and Tennyson Down are popular local walks. Dimbola Museum and Photographic Galleries are at Tennyson Down. The Needles Pleasure Park at Alum Bay with its coloured sand cliffs and chairlift to the beach is just south west of Freshwater, and Cowes is the premier yachting centre of the Isle of Wight. East Cowes' Osborne House was Queen Victoria's home. Alfred Lord Tennyson once lived at the Farringford Hotel on Freshwater Bay, and many poets, authors, and painters have been drawn to West Wight. With Yarmouth's harbour, pier, shops, inns, restaurants, and Tudor castle nearby, this is an ideal holiday base.

The cottage itself is lovely, the kitchen is one of the best equipped I have ever experienced in a self catering cottage, and the bathroom was lovely and clean. However, the whole place would benefit from a bit of money being spent on it. It feels a bit tired decoratively, and some of the furniture is quite worn, for example, the leather look sofas in the living area are worn and tatty looking, one of chairs round the table was rickety and did not feel safe to sit on, and the mattress in the single bed room was wafer thin. The shaver point in the bathroom didnât work. Having said that, we loved staying there, found it mostly comfortable, and would definitely stay there again.

The bathroom sink and bath took a long time to empty as though there was a blockage somewhere. In the kitchen there was no plug for the sink neither was there washing up bowl which would have negated the need for a plug. It would have been useful for there to have been an information package for telephone numbers for local doctors, vets, nearest hospital etc. Also there was no visitors book so that we could see what other people thought. On a positive note the cottage was in a nice rural area the bedding and towels were clean and The Red Lion Pub within walking distance had great food and friendly staff all of which I would have put in a visitors book. I have one health and safety issue the master bedroom has a step up into it, when exiting the room it looks flush with the landing, on the first night my partner went to the bathroom, missed the step(which looked level with the landing) fell forward and hit his head on the facing wall suffering a large gash on his head and badly bruising his foot. There needs to be better lighting in this area and the step needs to be identifiable when exiting the bedroom
