If you’re looking for a unique getaway in a unique property, look no further than this wonderful caponier apartment set within the moat of historic Fort Redoubt. Located on the cliffs of Freshwater Bay, this lovely holiday apartment originally served as an army barracks. Sleeping six people over three bedrooms and welcoming two four-legged friends, it’s the perfect accommodation option for a family or small group of friends looking for a getaway with a difference in a building that’s steeped in history. You’re also sure to enjoy the amazing bay views from this incredible fort, which was built under Prime Minister Lord Palmerston back in 1856.
Enter the grounds of Fort Redoubt over the bridge that crosses the moat and you’ll find yourself in a wonderful complex of properties dating back to Victorian times. Access to the caponier is via a staircase though an entrance door from the fort’s central parade square. Step inside and you’ll discover an open-plan living room/kitchen/diner. Cook up a storm in the fully-equipped kitchen and dine with your loved ones around the dining table. After dinner, chill out in front of the TV and the warming gas stove in the living area or retire to one of the three lovely bedrooms with a good book.
Lying just south of the town of Freshwater, Freshwater Bay (0.5 miles) is one of the most picturesque beaches in West Wight. It’s also a popular spot for kayakers and surfers. Alternatively, spend a lovely day at the former royal residence of Osborne House (19 miles). This gorgeous house was built between 1845 and 1851 for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as a summer retreat.
