Guests say

The Gate House is a charming, cosy cottage set in the tranquil grounds of a historic mansion, ideal for couples and dog-friendly. It offers a peaceful retreat with beautiful surroundings and is well-placed for exploring the Isle of Wight. Guests appreciate the romantic and idyllic setting, though some mention the property could benefit from a deep clean and maintenance updates.

Guests have reported issues with cleanliness, including cobwebs, dog hairs, and a general need for a more thorough cleaning. However, some guests found the cottage to be spotlessly clean, indicating inconsistency in cleaning standards.

The location is highly praised for its tranquillity, beautiful grounds, and proximity to local attractions. It is considered ideal for peaceful retreats and is appreciated for the ability to explore the Isle of Wight conveniently.

The cottage is described as cosy and comfortable, particularly for couples. However, some guests found the bed and sofa to be uncomfortable, and the small size of the cottage was noted as a limiting factor for comfort.

Facilities are seen as adequate but limited, with several guests suggesting improvements such as the addition of a shower and better cooking amenities. Maintenance issues like a non-functioning shower and the need for a new mattress were also mentioned.

Some guests were delighted by welcome gifts such as milk and Prosecco, adding a touch of thoughtfulness to their stay. However, it should be noted that such gestures are not guaranteed and may vary.

The solitude is delightful and we use the lodge as a base for walks and bus journeys to slightly further distant places around the island. English Heritage need to invest in the upkeep of the hall, without removing the joy of free visits and donations (which in our case, would stop if there were charges enforced on the house and /or grounds). The old Gate House has an air of modernity and such a peaceful ,well maintained old tradition feel to it. There is modern gadgetry to cook and watch televsion or DVD's (we left some for the next visitors to enjoy, in addition to those already supplied at the venue) and there is really decent wifi which takes off the edge of isolation as urgent family matters can be attended to, whilst sending home photos of what a great time we were having (reading books outside in the peaceful sunshine in October was a highlight!). A few minor tightening of screws etc. will be done over the closed season but I did not report them and therefore they cannot expect to be mind readers so no complaints to be had.

After I had arrived and been there a day or so I fell in love with the place. While it is small, it was perfect for us, and we really could not see what others complained about. The lack of an oven, was not a problem at all, there are plenty of places to go to eat, or grab a take away. The size of the bath was a bit of a squeaz, but not a problem, and the bed was comfortable. James was very friendly, and was quick to respond to a couple of minor issues. The location was perfect, I will say ideal, so calm and peaceful, and was lovely to look around the ruins of Appuldurcomb house. I was genuinly sad to leave such a lovely place, and we have decided that next time we visit the Isle of wight, we will book the Gatehouse, I have already recommended it to friends, and will continue to do so.

The property was small, but compact and had everything you needed including a very comfortable king size bed. The owner came to see that we had settled in and gave us a bit of the history about the house. Able to wonder around the grounds of the house once it had closed to the public. So peaceful.
