This cosy, 17th-century, semi-detached fisherman’s cottage, overlooks Newlyn harbour and coast, and is conveniently located between the seafaring town of Penzance and the quaint village and harbour of Mousehole. It is less than a 10-minute walk to local galleries, shops, pubs, restaurants, numerous cafés and a cinema. Chirgwin Cottage is Grade II listed and has many original features, and is a very quirky property with sloping floors, exposed beams (some old ship beams), an original stone fireplace, low ceilings and the original steep staircase. From the warmth of this Newlyn cottage, you can sit and watch the busy, ever-changing view over the harbour, and observe St Michael’s Mount perched on its rocky outcrop in the distance.
The area has some fascinating history, including the famous Newlyn artists, the Newlyn Art School and Museum, as well as stories of fishermen of bygone days. The location is perfect for exploring the harbour and waterfront on foot, and the mainly flat coastal path runs from Newlyn to Mousehole with a spectacular view around the sweeping bay. A long, wide, flat promenade runs from Newlyn Harbour into Penzance, passing the open-air swimming pool on the seafront, cafés pubs, restaurants, museums and shops. You may like to take a day trip to the beautiful Isles of Scilly from Penzance, or by air from nearby Land’s End Airport. There is also a regular local bus service running past the cottage and the main railway station at nearby Penzance makes it a great choice for guests wishing to arrive by train.
There are many great attractions in the area, including Land’s End, St Ives, the historic town of Marazion and St Michael’s Mount, all within a short distance. The outdoor Minack Theatre, built in to the cliff face with the ocean as a spectacular backdrop, is something not to be missed. The area is popular with walkers, bird and wildlife enthusiasts, with the nearby wildlife marshes at Marazion being of special interest. Cycle trails, sailing and water sports including surfing, kite surfing and kayaking are also available. Art lovers are well catered for, and there are also some amazing sub-tropical gardens to explore. Chirgwin Cottage provides an excellent base for exploring the rich heritage of West Cornwall on foot, by public transport or by car. Beach 1½ miles. Shop 500 yards, pub 250 yards and restaurant 1 mile.
