About this property

Spinning Wheel Cottage is a charming Grade-II listed thatched home set in the village of Otterton in Devon. Beautifully presented, the cottage has been sympathetically renovated to reveal many character features and nods to the history of the building believed to date back, in parts, to medieval times and is now a welcoming cottage with a stylish interior and thoughtful touches throughout. With its charming character and ideal location, Spinning Wheel Cottage offers a delightful retreat for family and friends looking to explore the picturesque surroundings of Devon. Step inside to find an inviting living/dining room, complete with wooden floors and beams, and an inglenook fireplace housing a woodburning stove, perfect for quiet evenings by the fire. Discover the small 'nook' in the cottage, complete with spinning wheel, reflecting its heritage of lace making and giving the property its name. The adjoining kitchen is a stylish and well configured space, with a cosy seating area perfect for enjoying your morning coffee or sitting quietly with a book. Ascend the wooden stairs to the first floor, where you will find the three well-appointed bedrooms, each themed to reflect the countryside and furnished with a real eye for detail, designed to provide a relaxing and restful break. Choose from a king-size bedroom with an en-suite walk-in shower, a double bedroom, and a twin bedroom, all featuring wooden flooring and beams that add to the cottage's warm ambience. For ultimate relaxation, the bathroom offers a soothing bath for you to unwind and relax after a day of beach adventures. Stepping outside, the cottage has two areas of garden, the rear walled has a covered seating area with mature climbing shrubs and a lawn surrounded by mature planting. A further enclosed garden at the side of the cottage provides extra space for children and pets to play safely. The owners have even included an outdoor tap for when you return with muddy walking boots or dog paws. Nestled in the picturesque Otter Valley, Otterton is a timeless village of thatched cottages and winding lanes. Its ancient Water Mill still hums with life, while the Victorian church stands watch. Once a Saxon settlement, it later became a smugglers’ haven, with contraband hidden in Ladram Bay’s caves. Today, the bay welcomes holidaymakers, and the village thrives; The Kings Arms offers a warm hearth, and Otterton Mill buzzes with artisans and fresh-baked bread, blending history with vibrant charm. There is also a well-stocked community shop for your day-to-day essentials. An area popular with walkers, wander to the banks of the River Otter where you will find plenty of gentle strolls and countryside walks. The picturesque seaside town of Budleigh Salterton has a 2.5-mile pebble beach with colourful beach huts overlooked by stunning red sandstone cliffs and safe, clean bathing water. The nearby River Otter Nature Reserve covers an area of 33 hectares and along with the cliffs of Otterton Point is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest with fine salt marsh habitat and one of the most popular footpaths in East Devon, running alongside an old 18th-century embankment that cuts through the floodplain. Other popular days out include the Regency town of Sidmouth or Bicton Park, an award-winning World Heritage Botanical Gardens which are open to the public all year. Whether your escape is one of relaxation or adventure, Spinning Wheel Cottage offers an welcoming haven to return to at the end of each day.

Set back from the coast among the rolling green countryside and wooded valleys of beautiful East Devon, this pretty village with its collection of traditionally thatched roofed cottages is straight from a picture postcard. Offering a quieter but no less beautiful holiday destination than the rest of the county it’s the perfect place to relax and unwind, and is just 3 miles from the Regency coastal resort towns of both Budleigh Salterton and Sidmouth, and one mile from the SW Coastal Path as it meanders above the waves towards the World Heritage Site ‘Jurassic Coast’ beaches with their abundant fossils. Ladram Bay with its red-stone sea stacks is just one mile away. Inland, footpaths follow the banks of the River Otter where fox, badger and birdlife play while just down the road from the village is Bicton Park and Botanical Gardens, 60 acres of garden lovers’ paradise. For a really interesting hour or two, visit the last working flour mill on the river Otter - it’s in the village and the flour is superb. There’s much to do and see in this beautiful and unspoilt area but if you want to explore further afield, the open spaces and high tors of Dartmoor can be reached in under an hour while the Cathedral city of Exeter with its superb shopping centre, cinemas, clubs and restaurants is a mere 10 miles.
