The Manger in Westwater, Axminster, is a well-received holiday rental with guests praising its tranquil location, rustic charm, and modern amenities. The property's welcome hamper and the owners' hospitality are frequently mentioned, contributing to a cosy and romantic atmosphere. While some guests noted issues with accessibility and dog-friendliness, the overall sentiment is one of satisfaction, with the property's cleanliness, comfort, and stunning views being highlights.
Most guests found the property to be clean and well-maintained, with only a few isolated comments about dust and a need for more thorough cleaning. The positive remarks about cleanliness far outweigh the negatives, indicating a high standard overall.
The location is described as beautiful and tranquil, offering stunning views and a sense of seclusion. However, some guests mentioned the difficulty of narrow roads and limited visibility, which could affect ease of access, especially at night.
Guests frequently commented on the comfort of the property, mentioning comfy beds and a cosy atmosphere. The large garden and luxurious touches like a large bath were appreciated, although some noted low beams and the open-plan en-suite as minor discomforts.
The property is generally well-equipped with modern amenities and a superbly equipped kitchen. However, there were remarks about the outside door handle, water pressure, and the placement of the microwave, suggesting some room for improvement in maintenance and facilities.
The welcome hamper was a highlight for many guests, indicating a high level of thoughtfulness from the hosts. While these gifts added to the guests' experience, it is important to note that such amenities, while delightful, are subject to change and not guaranteed.

The Manger boasts a picturesque thatched roof and an array of unique features that make it an ideal holiday home. The attractions of this charming property are enhanced by its stone walls, 17th century beams and roots from the past with the original horse stalls and hay racks. These original features allow guests to step back in time while enjoying modern comforts.
As visitors approach The Manger, they are greeted by an expanse of grassland and trees that lead to a mature orchard. These provide private space for relaxation and outdoor activities. The garden caters to a variety of leisurely pursuits, whether that involves unwinding or dining on the outdoor terrace or chasing a ball through the long grass. In early Spring the protected landscape comes alive with snowdrops and nesting birds while in May the nearby woods burst into colour as the native bluebells carpet the forest floor. Nature enthusiasts will delight in the frequent visits from badgers, deer, rabbits and, in season, a vast variety of butterflies and moths. Rare bats roost in the cider barn while woodpeckers, wagtails, swallows, and other birds nest nearby.
The Manger is ideally situated, not only in its unique setting but in its proximity to the stunning coastline and the small towns that line the famous Jurassic Coast. Guests can easily explore one of Europe’s greatest landslips, its rugged beauty and uncover how it is still revealing the secrets of the dinosaurs. The location was superb, the accommodation was basic. The upstairs was too hot, no fans provided and the windows opened by about 2 inches. There were security catches but the most dangerous window had a wobbly screw that wouldn't take much to fall out. There was no air flow. Downstairs the floors were cold. We found lots of silver fish amongst the crockery. The garden itself was beautiful but difficult to enjoy as the garden furniture should have been returned to the 1900's, paint flaking off and the most uncomfortable chairs imaginable. It wouldn't take much for the property to up it's game and could be fabulous. The cleanliness in the kitchen area was not great as the paint from the walls was flaking and it never felt clean. Even on a bright sunny day, you needed lights on as it was so dark. It was so nearly good.

A lovely property with a large enclosed garden for the dogs and a wonderfully quiet valley. Owners lovely and welcoming. For those who want immediate dog walks from the front door it's not perfect, but the near torrential rain and resultant over filled river in the valley may have impacted on us there. Those wanting: a pub you can easily walk to: having an aversion to a bathroom within the bedroom; or hating single track roads need to adjust your expectations pre arrival, but that is all made clear in the description. Overall excellent and a lovely holiday, but depending on what you want. For us perfect.
