Guests say

Cindy's Retreat is a well-located cottage in Devon, praised for its proximity to the beach and local amenities. Guests appreciate the spaciousness and the family-friendly environment. While some find the property to be a comfortable and convenient base for a holiday, others suggest that attention to maintenance and updates would enhance the experience.

The property has received mixed feedback on cleanliness. Some guests found it clean and tidy, while others reported issues such as leftover food, dirty laundry, and pet presence. The variance in experiences suggests room for improvement in housekeeping standards.

The location is consistently praised for being close to the beach, restaurants, and village centre, offering convenience and a quiet setting despite nearby traffic. It is considered a highlight and a strong asset of the property.

Comfort levels vary among guests, with some finding the house warm and comfy, while others report uncomfortable beds and issues with a travel cot. The living spaces are generally well-received, but the comfort of the sleeping arrangements could be enhanced.

Facilities are deemed adequate by some, with a well-equipped kitchen and good showers. However, there are several mentions of maintenance issues such as non-functioning windows, doors, and appliances. An update to some of the facilities would likely improve guest satisfaction.

There is no mention of gifts or special touches that would indicate thoughtfulness from the hosts. Therefore, it is not possible to assess this category based on the reviews provided.

About this property

A large detached cottage ideal for family holidays, situated just a few minutes’ walk from the beaches at Hope Cove, village pub and shop. Easy access to the South West Coast Path provides beautiful walks to Salcombe, Thurlestone and other coastal villages. Golf nearby at Thurlestone and Bigbury.

Sitting space is divided into two areas; a quiet area for reading with comfy chair, rocking chair and large cushions, whilst two sofas provide comfortable seating for watching the television, DVD player, video, Sky satellite system and CD/stereo. Large wall cabinet well stocked with books.

Spacious kitchen/dining room has a large oak dining table with eight wicker chairs. The modern kitchen features a central breakfast bar with two stools and cupboard storage, ceramic hob, electric fan oven, dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, fridge and freezer. A small utility area/cloakroom to the side of the kitchen can also be used as an entrance.

On the first floor are four bedrooms. The Master bedroom has sea glimpses, a King-size bed, wardrobe and an en suite bathroom with large shower cubicle and 'rain' shower head, basin, w.c. Twin bedroom with single beds, wardrobe. Third bedroom has a single bed with a pull-out stacker bed and wardrobe. Fourth bedroom has a king bed and wardrobe. Spacious family bathroom with roll-top bath, mixer tap shower, separate shower cubicle, basin, w.c.

For al fresco dining, there is a large garden with lawn, patio and garden furniture.

The picturesque fishing village of Hope Cove lies in a sheltered bay on South Devon’s coastline, offering superb views over Bigbury Bay and Burgh Island. A choice destination for families, two beaches offer soft sand for sandcastle building, plus rock pools great for entertaining children. The town remains a fishing village where crabs and lobsters are still landed, however it was once used by smugglers. Many ships have perished around the coast and the wrecks that lie beneath the waves make it a popular spot for divers. Above the beach there are a number of pubs and restaurants, including the popular café bar ‘The Cove’. The coastal footpath can be joined from here and leads towards the sandy beaches of Thurlestone and Bigbury-on-Sea in one direction, and the sailing town of Salcombe in the other.

Unfortunately the property is in need of some upgrades and maintenance. The Kitchen floor doesn’t appear to have been cleaned and washed properly in a very long time. The bath has many chips and damage to the interior surface. The general maintenance of the property is lacking and tired. Finally the television is of a poor quality with a sub standard picture and sound. I’ve personally thrown better sets away. It’s a shame that a with a little more attention to detail, the owners could make this property far more appealing.

I finally contacted coast and country for help and discovered that they were still the local agent. Our family have booked this property over many years and we love it. We lacked wine glasses which you promptly provided. You also asked your handyman to try and free the windows, especially the kitchen window. This was unsuccessful and he was going to report back to coast and country as they needed further attention. Otherwise terrific stay.

The house is in a fantastic location, only a few minutes walk to the beach. We were there on the hottest day of the year so far so was a bit worried to read windows did not open. However found this was not true, you just had to use key to unlock them. Simple. Well equipped kitchen, lovely quality beds and linen. Overall great experience. Will be back.
