Aune Cottage in Salcombe is praised for its stunning sea views, perfect location, and cosy atmosphere. Guests appreciate the proximity to the town centre, the well-equipped property, and the pleasant garden. Some challenges with parking and access are noted, alongside a desire for better communication and minor maintenance issues.
The property generally appears to be well-maintained, though there are isolated reports of dust and a previous guest's hair found, suggesting room for improvement in cleaning standards.
The location is highly regarded for its central position, quietness, and beautiful views. However, accessibility issues due to steep hills and parking limitations slightly affect the score.
The comfort of the cottage is well-received, with particular praise for the comfortable double bed and the views from the garden. Some guests, however, mention the need for better mattresses and the challenge of steep stairs.
While the property is appreciated for its general facilities, there are several mentions of maintenance issues such as the need for safety bannisters, scalding water from the heater, and the lack of Wi-Fi. No specific mention of gifts or additional thoughtful touches was made, so this score cannot be provided.
There are no specific mentions of gifts or special thoughtful touches provided by the hosts, so it is not possible to assess this category.
Aune Cottage is within a row of picturesque terraced cottages just off Fore Street in central Salcombe, and is perfect for a couple or family with small children. The towns' shops, restaurants and delightful waterfront are just a few yards walk away at the bottom of Robinsons Row. The property offers pleasant estuary views from the garden.
The cottage is accessed directly into a small cosy sitting room with feature open fireplace. The dining area has a table and seating for four guests, and there is a well equipped galley kitchen. Downstairs bathroom, with bath, electric shower (over), w.c., wash-hand basin with heated towel rail.
Stairs with a handrail lead up from the dining room to the first floor bedrooms, including a master bedroom with a double bed and second bedroom (preferably for children) with 3ft bunk beds.
Patio doors lead onto a terrace and garden beyond. At the rear of the property is a good size garden with terrace area (accessed via the bunk bedroom) with patio table and chairs and pleasant views of the estuary.
Salcombe is a popular destination for watersports enthusiasts, walkers and families looking for a holiday by the sea. There are several pretty beaches within a short distance, including North Sands and South Sands, plus the coves East Portlemouth on the opposite side of the estuary, just a short passenger ferry ride away. Also on your doorstep is the National Trust property Overbeck’s where you can wander through the subtropical gardens. Why not have a more adventurous day and try out the watersports available on the estuary including surfing, coasteering, kayaking or a more leisurely boat trip? Whilst staying in Salcombe, take advantage of the locally sourced seafood which is served in many of the restaurants, pubs, cafés and delicatessens. The lino on floor before bathroom was damaged propbably from a previous flood from a washing machine - this needs replacing as could be a trip hazard The corner of the bath panel was also damaged. I caught my leg on this when moving from the basin to use the toilet. Not an issue but wanted to mention it. The economy 7 heating looked a bit grubby - perhaps a good clean on these but in good working order. Other than that, we loved the cosyness of the cottage. Its perfect proximity to the town centre, it was well stocked for kitchen utilities, plenty of plates & cups / glasses etc. & would recommend wifi, however we managed to get round that by using phone data. (my son needed internet for job applications on his laptap) . Would definitely stay again, thanks

However, the hill was quite a haul up and down especially for those of us in our 80s. Also the trek to the car park was more than we had bargained for. The beds also were not the most comfortable either.

Com doesnât mention the property is not accessible by road and states there is "free parking on site". We visited with a 7month old so had a lot of luggage - we would not have booked this cottage had we known prior to booking that we would not be able to access the property by car. It was also not clear that you have to climb a steep hill to get to the property, which again is difficult with a pram/lots of luggage. I suspect this would be near impossible in a wheelchair. The property had not been dusted well. We also found a clump of a previous guestsâ hair on the mat by the back door. The mattresses need replacing. The sheets on the bed in the front bedroom were too big so came off every night. The thin white curtains in the bedrooms do not block any light. Some of the kitchen knives are in desperate need of sharpening. There are two loose plug sockets - one back right in the dining room, and one to the left of the door as you enter the main bedroom (this one is extremely loose!). The smaller bedroom has a small amount of peeling wallpaper so needs a bit of glue, I appreciate this feedback sounds very critical, but I think a lot of these points could be resolved very quickly and cheaply/no cost (with exception of the mattresses). I think these issues being resolved would make a significant difference to the quality of a stay. We did appreciate the close proximity to the town which was a big positive. Added extras like a washing machine and blu-ray player were also both positives. The views from the garden were lovely with a good amount of space to relax outside.
