Guests say

Old Town House in Dawlish receives praise for its cleanliness, character, and convenient location with easy access to local amenities and transport. Guests appreciate the off-road parking and the welcoming touches such as cream tea. Some guests suggest improvements in lighting, bedding comfort, and the addition of a freezer.

The property is consistently described as clean and well-presented, with several guests highlighting its spotless condition. Only one mention of an unusual smell upon arrival, which dissipated, prevents a perfect score.

The location is highly regarded for its proximity to the town, shops, cafes, and transport links. However, some guests note the busy road and occasional noise, slightly affecting the score.

Many guests find the property comfortable, with a well-equipped kitchen and comfortable main bed. However, there are comments about the lack of a freezer, the need for better lighting, and some find the beds uncomfortable, which affects the score.

Facilities are generally well-received, especially the private parking and well-equipped kitchen. Criticisms include the absence of a freezer, the need for more cutlery and a clothes horse, and suggestions for outdoor furniture. The lack of a downstairs toilet and issues with a blind and mattresses are noted.

Guests frequently mention and appreciate the thoughtful welcome pack, including cream tea, although it is noted that such gifts are not guaranteed. Some suggestions for additional thoughtful touches, like a nightlight on the landing, are made.

The only issue I have is with the stairs. I appreciate that there are several warnings both in the original information and at the cottage about their quirky nature, but in spite of this I managed to fall down a couple of steps, bruising my foot quite badly. I am sure that this is due mainly to the rope ‘handrail’ being too slack and therefore moving too much and not providing enough support. In spite of this incident we did enjoy our stay.

The second floor bedroom window blind was broken on our arrival. We contacted the caretake, initially by text but no reply so had to phone her. She said the owners were sending a new one but she did not know when and would get back to me. Following day I had a text from her to say could she get into property to measure blind to forward this to owners so they could send new one. However looking at feedback comments at the cottage it appears the blind had been an issue for a while. We were only staying for 3 nights so this issue was not fixed by time we left. The people staying in that room had to use the cushions from the living room sofa as a way to cover the window at night - there is a street light outside the property. The bottom sheet of the first floor bedroom had some black marks on the edge of it. We also commented to the caretaker that the water tasted metallic and was that an issue in that area but got no reply. We did note there was a new kettle in the property and wondered if it was that or the water supply. We ended up buying bottled water and boiling it on the hob. Also only one toilet roll was left at the property and it would have been a nice touch to have a spare one. Having said all of this we did enjoy our stay and the cream tea, milk and bottle of water in the fridge was a very nice touch.

We found the house comfortable, clean and well equipped. The bonus was the private parking space which is very rare in Dawlish. The outside garden space is in need of attention although we did not use it during our stay. We would definitely stay again. Easy to walk into town and the beach.
