Set on a country estate, this characterful Victorian stone lodge offers a lovely base for exploring the unspoiled Herefordshire landscape. The peaceful rural retreat sleeps four guests and is within 3 miles of historic Kington, with its independent shops, eateries and traditional timber-framed cottages. Walkers are spoiled for choice, with a wealth of classic trails to enjoy, while the charming market of Leominster (10 miles) is a must for browsing its antique and vintage shops.
The lodge is one of a group of Victorian cottages and stables on this scenic site. Enter through the porch, with space for coats and boots, and into the bright lounge, with a sumptuous sofa, comfortable chairs and a coal-effect electric fire. Enjoy a night at the movies in a separate cinema room with a 60” TV and a sofa serving as a single bed. The kitchen/diner has a stylish glass table and large fridge/freezer. Upstairs, you’ll find two inviting super-king-size bedrooms, furnished in soft, neutral tones. Both can be made up as twins and have gorgeous en-suite bathrooms. Outside your holiday home, enjoy the beautiful surrounding gardens with outdoor seating, a BBQ and a shared, heated outdoor pool in the summer months.
Head for Kington, the starting point for a hike up to Hergest Ridge, with dramatic views across the English-Welsh border. Historic waymarked routes include Offa’s Dyke Path and the Mortimer Trail, with shorter, circular walks around the town. Meet the animals, including guinea pigs, miniature horses and owls at the Small Breeds Farm, take a picnic or enjoy a cuppa at the farm’s tearoom, with lovely countryside views. Explore the National Trust’s magnificent 17th-century Cwmmau Farmhouse (5.5 miles), surrounded by historic woodland, wildflower meadows and wonderful views of the Black Mountains.
