About this property

Stokesley 7.9 miles. Enjoying spectacular views of the amazing North Yorkshire Moors is this picture-perfect stone cottage, resting on a working hill farm close to the village of Chop Gate, and within the North York Moors National Park. Providing an idyllic retreat for four guests who want to be within natural surroundings and on the doorstep of their outdoor adventure, this homely and reverse-level dwelling is the perfect choice. Wood Cottage, so named because it stands next to the gate leading to the wood, is a lovingly renovated 200 year old barn and makes delightful living accommodation. Once here take in the extraordinary views of Raisdale and Bilsdale before stepping inside to discover the ground floor, home to two bedrooms, including a pretty twin room, and a lovely double bedroom, with king size bed, both with delightful bedding and furnishings to make you feel at home. Also resting on this floor is the bright and spacious bathroom, where a bath with a shower over is housed for you to freshen up in, with a cloakroom next door too for added convenience. Move upstairs to find the heart of the home within the first-floor open-plan living space, where the beautiful fabrics and furnishings have been carefully selected to keep the cottage light and pretty. From here you can take in the fabulous views of the surrounding countryside or relax on the sofa in front of the stove-effect fire. Ensure the group enjoys a hearty meal after a day of walking on the North York Moors by rustling up a fabulous dish in the amply-equipped kitchen, complete with an electric oven and hob, dishwasher and fridge/freezer, with a country-style dining table to sit around and tuck in. Make use of your own patio space and garden outside with seating so you can rest and relax within this divine location, surrounded by magnificent scenery. Enjoy views across the open countryside which includes a field barn, the only one in the area, and the stone-walled fields so typical of the farmland hereabouts. A short walk in any direction provides a site for a picnic; making this the ideal base for a family holiday, romantic break, get together with friends or just the chance to unwind and get away from it all; or put on your walking boots and begin discovering the expansive North Yorkshire Moors in all their heather-clad beauty, where many routes coincide, as well as the 110-mile long Cleveland Way running close by. Enjoy fabulous countryside leading through woodland, fields, hills and dales over towards the Wainstones and beyond. Chop Gate, 1/2 a mile from Wood Cottage, offers a pub that serves local food. For guests willing to travel a little further, the village of Great Broughton is 4 miles away and offers several local pubs with restaurants and just 7 miles away is the market town of Stokesley with a traditional high street, a weekly market and monthly farmers market. There is also an excellent leisure centre with swimming pool and gym, and a 9-hole golf course, driving range and crazy golf. Travelling from Wood Cottage in the opposite direction brings you to the picturesque market town of Helmsley in the Ryedale area. You can stroll around the market and grab coffee or lunch in one of the many cafes, or hotels and even try out the local ice-cream and handmade chocolates or visit the stick man who made Nanny McPhee's magic walking stick. Discover the delightful village of Great Ayton, or head over to Whitby where a host of seaside attractions await as well as a beautiful beach, with the fabulous Whitby Abbey overlooking the town and reached via the challenging 199 Steps, perhaps travelling here by steam train from Pickering, 45 minutes drive away from Wood Cottage, with the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway. Other nearby attractions include many National Trust properties, Captain Cook's monument, Roseberry Topping, Flamingo Land, Castle Howard and the historic city of York. Note: This property can be booked with Ref. 1126877, together sleeping six guests.

The cottage was immaculate and had everything we needed with very comfy beds. The surroundings just beautiful – you forget how quiet and dark places can be. The night sky was amazing without light pollution and it was lovely to be based on a working sheep farm with friendly dog and cats!! Lots of walks in the area which you can start from the cottage. We have booked to go again next year! Thank you Robert.

We have been holidaying in self catering accommodation for many years and have experienced the wide range of what is available. Wood Cottage is an exception to the norm. From the design stage it was obviously made for purpose. Both the bedrooms are a great size and have the most comfortable beds we have experienced away from home. The second WC was useful with four adults staying. The living/kitchen area is on the first floor and a good size and again well designed. The kitchen equipment from the cooker to the teaspoons and everything in between is plentiful and good quality. A clear concise guide covers everything in the cottage. The mobile signal is virtually non existent but you might be able to get WiFi calls with your provider, however the internet speed is limited. The TV is Freeview and that comes with more limited options than Freesat or anything you might be used to with streaming services. There is a DVD player so pack some of your favourite films to watch. Now finally we have to talk about the setting, it is a working farm and the approaching drive way is a gravel up hill which is a little uneven is places. However when you arrive and get out the area is absolutely stunning and has to be seen to be believed and there is direct access to walks from the doorsteps.
