Situated in the village of Ruswarp, a mile from historic Whitby, this Gothic-style property offers holiday living on a grand scale – perfect for a larger get-together of family or friends.

There are beautiful gardens, a secluded patio area, elevated decking and stunning views over the River Esk and valley beyond. The scenery is sublime, matched by an excellent standard of accommodation, with many period features and spacious rooms. Some of those features include: beamed ceilings ornate ceiling cornices, gothic style arches and original windows. Most rooms and hallways have large chandeliers.

This truly is a divine retreat in which to spend quality time with special people.

Arriving on the sweeping driveway, your eyes will be drawn to an impressive entrance with coat of arms above its double doors. A vestibule leads to a generous reception hall. From here, discover the main sitting room with its grand windows, including a gorgeous bay window, with window seat overlooking the river Esk. There is plenty of space for everyone, three large settees and armchair. Fling open the French doors and spill out into the garden – delightful in the warmer months and so convivial.

There is a cloakroom just off the entrance hallway.

Descend to the lower ground floor kitchen via the entrance hallway or garden. There is everything here you will need to cater for a larger group, with a handy Amerian-style fridge freezer that can be well stocked with delicious local produce and Whitby seafood. The dining area has table an chairs to comfortably sit guests, plus there’s a TV with Freesat/DVD.

Off the kitchen is a second sitting room with three sofas, TV with Freesat/DVD, board games and books – a relaxing space, great for the kids to hang out together.

Make your way up to the first floor master bedroom suite with fabulous valley vistas from two windows, sit awhile as the light pours in and let your eyes settle on the distant horizon – what a wonderful view to wake up to every morning!



Also on the first floor, a twin bedroom with two full size 3′ single beds plus a double bedroom (with 4′ bed).

A spacious dual aspect bathroom has a bath with handheld shower, separate shower cubicle, basin and WC.

Climb up the stairs to a charming second floor twin bedroom with two full size 3′ single beds. There is also a further double bedroom, again with a dressing table, chair, large wardrobe and boasting superb views across the valley.

Great news – the second floor has its own bathroom with a bath and basin. A separate WC is nearby. Plus, there’s a shower room. No need to argue over who goes first here! A utility room with washing machine, tumble dryer and sink provides excellent laundry facilities.

Let’s explore the gardens – they’re so beautiful, with established shrubs and trees, immaculate lawned areas, ideal for younger guests to let off steam and a pretty water feature. An elevated decked area boasts sublime views over the River Esk and beyond. There is seating and a BBQ for al fresco dining, plus private parking for three or four cars by the entrance door.

Ruswarp is an idyllic and picturesque village situated on the banks of the river Esk. It offers a good local inn, renowned butcher’s, and a charming boating lake plus miniature steam railway – it’s possible to hire a boat and take a leisurely trip along the Esk. The river is tidal to this point and seals swim up from the harbour and bask on the weir – an amazing sight.

Whitby is a five minute drive away, and guests are sure to love its historic old town, Abbey and St Mary’s church. It’s worth spending time here exploring on foot, everything is very accessible, thanks to the famous swing bridge which links the West and East Cliffs. Whitby is excellent for restaurants and, of course, world-class fish and chips.

Whitby is a charming and atmospheric town of winding streets and hidden alleys, with a picturesque harbour, safe sandy beaches and of course the Abbey, reached by the famous 199 steps.
