Guests say

Bar Hill Lodge is a charming and comfortable property set in a tranquil forest location teeming with wildlife, offering guests a peaceful retreat with beautiful walks right from the doorstep. The lodge is well-equipped and provides a secure garden for dogs, with many guests enjoying the presence of birds and other wildlife. While some guests suggest the lodge could benefit from a refresh and a more user-friendly shower, the overall experience is highly regarded for its natural setting and cosy atmosphere.

The lodge generally provides a warm and cosy environment. However, there are mentions of a stale odour in the main bedroom and a need for a more thorough clean, suggesting room for improvement in cleanliness.

The location is highly praised for its edge-of-forest setting, offering excellent wildlife watching opportunities and walks. The seclusion and quietness are consistently appreciated, although the access track is noted as rough.

Guests find the cottage comfortable and welcoming, with a well-equipped kitchen and a secure garden for pets. The comfort of the double bedroom and the absence of a proper shower are noted as areas that could be enhanced.

The lodge is considered well-equipped and charming with lots of character. However, guests have suggested the need for cosmetic upgrades, a proper shower unit, and some guests experienced broadband issues.

While guests mention a lovely text from Cheryl checking in on their arrival, there are no specific references to gifts or additional thoughtful touches that would warrant a score in this category.

About this property

Unique detached 19th century lodge cottage in a picturesque location on the edge of the popular Cally Woods and Fleet Forest. A short rough unmade track leads to this idyllic rural cottage making it a peaceful retreat, yet only 2 miles from Gatehouse of Fleet with its shops, crafts and restaurants.

The cottage has views of the rolling hills of Galloway with an enclosed terraced garden to the back. To the front, there is a woodland garden with bridges over a small stream, and a large wildlife pond, with a deck for relaxing. To help you enjoy your stay, books, local maps and information, games and toys are provided.

The woods are a haven for wildlife including bats, red squirrels, badgers and deer which can all be seen from the cottage windows. The cottage is ideally situated for walking and cycling with trails and paths, which lead through the forest and down to the coast, literally right on your doorstep! Cycle hire is available in nearby Castle Douglas. The large sandy beaches at Sandgreen and Carrick, with its rock pools, are nearby and make for great days on the beach for family outings. The area also has plenty of opportunity for golf, riding, water sports on Loch Ken and fishing (lake and sea) all within easy reach.

Lovely cottage well equipped and really comfortable especially with the fire. Lovely walks until Freddie out black lab cut his pad open and all exercise stopped. Vets at Kirkudbright very cheap and caring, highly recommended. A relaxing and restful two weeks and will be back.

Bar Hill Lodge provided a perfect secluded getaway location and was heaven for the dogs. The property itself has loads of charm and is welcoming, comfortable and well equipped. Lots of birds and wildlife to enjoy, keeping all the feeders full was an enjoyable daily job. Woodpeckers galore!
