Guests say

Shaw Cottage is a charming rural retreat praised for its peacefulness, wildlife, and beautiful views. Guests appreciate the quiet location, proximity to local attractions, and the welcoming owner. While some guests mention issues with cleanliness and maintenance, the overall sentiment is positive, with many looking forward to returning.

Cleanliness receives mixed reviews, with several guests satisfied, particularly with the recently decorated lounge and bedrooms, while others note areas for improvement, such as cobwebs and dog hairs. The majority of feedback is positive, but the negative comments slightly impact the overall perception.

The location is highly praised for its tranquility, wildlife, and proximity to local amenities and attractions. Guests love the rural setting and views, with only minor concerns about the access track. The location is a standout feature for those seeking a peaceful getaway.

Comfort is generally well-received, with guests finding the cottage comfortable and well-equipped. Some guests mention the need for better mattresses and sofa replacements, but the overall experience is one of rustic charm and relaxation.

Facilities are appreciated, with mentions of good Wi-Fi and a well-appointed kitchen. However, there are several comments about the need for maintenance, particularly in the garden and with the heating system. The presence of a washer/dryer is a bonus, but the outdoor areas require attention.

The owner's thoughtfulness is noted with a welcome pack and local map provided to some guests, contributing to a positive experience. However, as not all reviews mention this, it's suggested that such gestures, while appreciated, may not be consistent for all stays.

The peak of Criffel, at 570 metres, dominates the quiet village of New Abbey, offering excellent walking and stunning views over southwest Scotland and the Lake District. Sweetheart Abbey, a 1273 Cistercian abbey, represents the village's history, and the village is home to a shop, a coffee shop, and two hotels. The nearby River Nith is a great fishing spot. 8 miles north is Dumfries, formerly a royal burgh and split in two by the River Nith, which flows into the Solway Firth.

All amenities catered for with lots of space to store our kit and foodstuff. Great position to explore all Dumfriesshire, we particularly loved the Steamboat Inn at Carsethorn and all the local walks - we had great weather so very lucky. Only downsides were a repeated visit from a cow which had somehow got out of the field, and the messy outhouse which was uncharacteristic. Recommend this one.
