Guests say

Shaw Cottage is praised for its peaceful, rural setting with beautiful views and abundant wildlife. Guests appreciate the quietness, garden space, and the cottage's charm. While some find the cottage comfortable and well-equipped, others note areas for improvement, particularly in maintenance and cleanliness. The owner is often mentioned as friendly and welcoming.

Reviews are mixed regarding cleanliness. Some guests found the cottage to be clean and comfortable, while others noted issues with cobwebs and cleanliness in the kitchen and bathroom. The presence of dog hairs and the need for a more thorough cleaning between stays were mentioned.

The location is highly praised for its tranquility, proximity to wildlife, and scenic views. It is described as an ideal retreat for relaxation, with easy access to local attractions and amenities within a short drive.

Comfort receives positive remarks for the cottage's character and recent decoration in some rooms. However, some guests mention that the beds could be more comfortable and the sofas are small and not as cosy as expected.

Facilities are generally appreciated, especially the well-equipped kitchen and the presence of Wi-Fi. However, there are several comments about the need for maintenance, such as improving the shower pressure, garden upkeep, and addressing heating system issues.

The owner's thoughtfulness is noted in the provision of a welcome pack with local goodies, which guests found delightful. However, it is politely stated that such gifts are a kind gesture and may not be guaranteed for every stay.

The peak of Criffel, at 570 metres, dominates the quiet village of New Abbey, offering excellent walking and stunning views over southwest Scotland and the Lake District. Sweetheart Abbey, a 1273 Cistercian abbey, represents the village's history, and the village is home to a shop, a coffee shop, and two hotels. The nearby River Nith is a great fishing spot. 8 miles north is Dumfries, formerly a royal burgh and split in two by the River Nith, which flows into the Solway Firth.

Lacking basic things like a frying pan (only a griddle pan supplied), vegetable peeler was blunt and couldn't be used, beds were old and creaky with springs that woke you up when you turned over. A huge shame really as with improved decor and attention to a few smaller details could be a 5 star property. We still enjoyed the stay though. Fantastic woodburner, lovely views and 4 days of peace and quiet.

Lots of garden for your four-legged friend, and plenty of good walking within a short drive. Highly recommended.

All amenities catered for with lots of space to store our kit and foodstuff. Great position to explore all Dumfriesshire, we particularly loved the Steamboat Inn at Carsethorn and all the local walks - we had great weather so very lucky. Only downsides were a repeated visit from a cow which had somehow got out of the field, and the messy outhouse which was uncharacteristic. Recommend this one.
