Newton Stewart sits beside the River Cree near the Galloway Hills. As well as places to eat, drink and shop, the town has an interesting local museum and an information centre so that you can learn about the area and plan what you want to do and see during your stay. Walkers flock to the Galloway Hills for the huge choice of footpaths, including those through the Galloway Forest Park and around Loch Trool. Bruce's Stone has panoramic views over the loch, with other trails leading to the summit of The Merrick. Kirroughtree Visitors Centre has walking and cycling routes. Mountain bikers will also enjoy the trails, including those at the Glentrool 7Stanes mountain bike centre. Newton Stewart has an 18-hole golf course where visitors are welcome to book a time to play.
The River Cree has excellent fishing. Guests can cast their rod from the patio of Otter Cottage. Nearby lochs are full of salmon and trout, while Luce Bay is good for tope and bass. Fishing permits are available from Galloway Angling Centre in Newton Stewart town centre. If that sounds a little too sedate then you can drive a tank, go clay pigeon shooting or range shooting, and drive 4x4s at the Galloway Tanks Activity Centre. There are lots of beaches within easy reach of Otter Cottage. Garlieston Beach and Wigtown Bay are 15 miles away, and you can drive to the Mull of Galloway lighthouse in under an hour. Sandhead, Kirkmadrine, Drummore and Port Logan are also beautiful at any time of the year.
