About this property

Offering cosy accommodation with stunning views across the surrounding countryside from the patio, Dalgarnock cottage is one of six cottages in a courtyard setting converted from the original 18th century farm steading, close to the historic village of Thornhill which nestles at the foot of the dramatic Southern Uplands on the banks of the river Nith.

It was in this location that Scottish historian, Thomas Carlyle married his sweetheart Jane Welsh in 1826, you can also visit his birthplace in nearby Ecclefechan.

The cottage is perfect for couples looking for a relaxing break and even boasts its own private Hot Tub. Complimented with an on-site indoor heated swimming pool, outdoor Hot Tub and sauna are available for guests to book for exclusive hourly use (small additional charge applies) this is the ideal location to kick back and take time out from the stresses of everyday life and enjoy some R & R!

Thornhill is a thriving small, rural village approximately half a mile away with a selection of boutiques, pubs, restaurants and coffee shops, as well as butchers and a bakery whilst there is also a small supermarket for more mundane fare. After a hard day exploring you are spoilt for choice over where to end the day, be it the relaxed setting of the cottage or enjoying the local hospitality in the nearby village.

The local area, as with all of Southern Scotland is famous for the scenery and wildlife that can be enjoyed. The cottage makes a central base from which to enjoy the wide-open spaces of the Scottish Hills and the fabulous coast of the Solway Firth, with the chance to see red squirrels, deer, otters and many bird species with winter being a wonderful time to see the amazing numbers of wintering geese on the Solway Firth merse foreshore.

Outdoor activities available on the door step are many and varied including walks and cycle routes with tracks for all abilities, golf, fishing and riding. Due to the very low light pollution in the area the dark night skies offer amazing opportunities for star gazing. With excellent canoe/kayak opportunities on the river Nith

The culture and history of Scotland can also be discovered and enjoyed at many local sites including nearby Drumlanrig Castle, part of Buccleuch Estate with its beautiful gardens, wonderful adventure playground, numerous signed walking and mountain bike trails and famous art collection. There are numerous links to Scotland’s National Bard, Robert Burns including his farm at nearby Ellisland, whilst slightly further afield in Dumfries you will find his House and also The Globe Inn all of which are believed to provide inspiration for his works. A drive through the Mennock Pass will take you to the highest village in Scotland at Wanlockhead, home of Scotland’s Lead Mining Museum with its sister village of Leadhills nearby. At Wanlockhead you can take a guided tour of Leadnell Mine and see how the miners lived during its years of operation, and even try your hand at panning for Gold. Leadhills offers the opportunity to take a ¾ mile train journey through the Lowther Hills and historic lead mine workings. Crawick Multiverse near Sanquhar is also well worth a visit. Here you can experience the transformation of a former opencast coal mine into a creative Land Art Project by leading landscape architect Charles Jencks. All offering an unrivalled cross section of life from days gone by through the industrial revolution to modern life; however, one thing that has not changed is the tranquil beauty that greets all who venture into Southern Scotland.
