It’s simply idyllic. This little island surrounded by clear waters and boats bobbing around is a very special place. There’s an old curing station here, which has been in the same family for hundreds of years. Its heyday was in the 17th and 18th century when herring and cod was exported to the continent. The owners live on Dry Island in the old curing station building. There are two self-catering cabins on the island, and one of which is the Captain’s Cabin & Barrel. It enjoys half of the island to itself, so in addition to a totally unique accommodation offering you’re also getting isolation you have only ever dreamt of before! Where else can you get half an island to yourself?

Before we go into detail about the Captain’s Cabin & Barrel, the journey to Dry Island is part of the allure and magic of the place. The west coast of Scotland has many special spots, but Dry Island is arguably near the top of the list. It’s so special as a place that Channel 5 recently featured the island and the family that live here in the series City Life to Country Life. It is so worth a watch, you’ll be compelled to book a short break or week at the Captain’s Cabin & Barrel to experience the place for yourself.

You reach Badachro with its fabulous Inn and make your way down a little footpath bordered with scallop shells to the shore. Along the water’s edge you reach a floating foot bridge and crossing it you feel like you’re entering another world. You’ll be welcomed upon arrival and shown to the western side of the island, where through a little gate your half of this paradise awaits you. Surrounded by native and non-native trees, there are views from the cabin of the sea and Badachro Bay. There are little footpaths to explore on your half of the island to find your own special spot to soak it all up from. It’s a truly magical place.

The main cabin is where you will find the living/dining/kitchen space. It’s spacious and comfortable for two people. The porch has a table and chairs to enjoy alfresco dining. Set down from the main cabin is a fire pit to enjoy more outdoor living, and next to the cabin, is a Finnish wood-burning hot tub to really slow down and decompress from modern life. The Barrel contains a comfy double bed. And there’s a shower room outhouse with walk-in shower. This is glamping at its very best. The Captain’s Cabin & Barrel is unique at every turn and the more time you spend on Dry Island the more you get out of it. During your stay you must go out on the boat with the owner of Dry Island. He and his family run Shellfish Safaris as well as being a full-time fishing family. Not only do you learn about fishing in the north-west Highlands but also, you’ll get an insight into the history and culture of Dry Island, Badachro and Gairloch Bay that you won’t find anywhere else.

Based at Dry Island you’re also only a few miles from the North Coast 500 touring route. So, within minutes you can be on a road trip exploring this spectacle of an area. But to be honest, once you’re on Dry Island, you won’t need for anywhere else!
