Kirk Cottage is highly praised for its cleanliness, cosy comfort, and stunning, peaceful location. Guests appreciate the friendly owners and neighbours, as well as the beautiful walks and wildlife. While some found the remoteness and lack of mobile signal challenging, most relished the tranquillity and the opportunity to disconnect. The property is well-equipped, though some minor suggestions for improvements were made.

Guests consistently describe the cottage as very clean, with several reviews specifically mentioning its cleanliness. The property appears to be well-maintained, contributing to the high level of cleanliness experienced by visitors.

The location is frequently described as beautiful and peaceful, ideal for walks and enjoying nature. However, some guests noted the remoteness and difficulty with mobile signals. The scenic views and quietness are highly valued, but accessibility during adverse weather conditions is a concern for some.

The majority of guests found the cottage cosy and comfortable, with a warm atmosphere enhanced by features like a log burner. Comfortable beds and furniture are often mentioned, although a few guests had issues with the steep stairs and the size of the kitchen.

Facilities are generally well-regarded, with the cottage being described as well-equipped and having good central heating. Some guests suggested improvements such as better lighting for the garden path, additional kitchen equipment, and more hooks for towels. The lack of mobile signal and Wi-Fi was a drawback for some.

While the reviews reflect positively on the owners' helpfulness and the provision of essentials, there is no specific mention of gifts or extra thoughtful touches that would warrant a score in this category. Therefore, the score is set to null.

About this property

A cosy, end-terrace cottage situated in the quiet hamlet of Hownam, nine miles from the town of Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders. Comfortably furnished, Kirk Cottage makes an ideal peaceful retreat for two, where you can make a lovely cooked meal in the kitchen before enjoying it in the dining area, and then relax with a glass of wine in front of the woodburning stove in the sitting room. Outside, there’s an enclosed decked area, a perfect place to sit and unwind with a good book or dine alfresco after a day’s walking, cycling or round of golf, with the nearest course just ten miles away. There is also very limited light pollution here, so on crisp nights, why not settle to stargaze beneath the night's sky, before heading back inside to cosy up beside the fire? Situated on the edge of the Cheviot Hills, this wonderful cottage is a great base as there’s plenty of walking and cycling in the area, along with fishing on the nearby River Tweed, by local permit. The lovely Border towns of Jedburgh and Kelso are close by and are well worth a visit, plus there are a number of other excellent villages and towns to visit in the area, and Edinburgh is just over an hour’s drive away. This superb Borders cottage promises to be an ideal romantic break at any time of the year. EPC Rating: Band F

Everything was as expected, no surprise. Kitchen space is tight but functional. Other rooms are spacious. Small fridge. Parking space for the car. Clean with plugin perfumes. Nice house. Will recommend.

It was the ideal escape from our busy lives, just what we needed! The cottage is quaint and situated in a quiet picturesque hamlet within the Scottish Borders. The enclosed garden was just perfect for our dogs and we enjoyed sitting outside most of the time due to the gorgeous weather. We look forward to returning back in the near future. Many thanks to both Chris & Jayne.
