The orchard and grounds are shared with guests at the castle. The central location enables easy access to some wonderful countryside in the Clyde Valley Woodlands National Nature Reserve just north of Lanark, 5 miles, where there are way marked trails to explore. At the unesco New Lanark World Heritage Centre on the magnificent Falls of Clyde, you can discover how life was lived at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Fantastic little cottage for a peaceful break from home.

A great, well equipped cottage in the grounds of Hallbar Tower (Braidwood Castle). Good location for exploring the Clyde Valley, the west coast of southern Scotland and the Borders. Postcode isn’t exact for the location so suggest using “what 3 words” to find the cottage.

Cottage smelled of damp dog when we arrived - fair enough we thought but it turned out to be a bunged up hoover which was left for us to se to clean the property before leaving. No coffee table or anywhere to put a cuppa in the lining area. There were two enormous armchairs against a wall that looked as though they were waiting for collection from an eBay listing. Couldn’t use the shed to store the bikes despite it being advertised (and one reason we booked) - arrived in the Friday and emailed same date - had to wait until Monday to be told we couldn’t use it as it was shared with the other property (wasn’t - there are 2 garages!) due to COVID.So the bikes had to live in the already cramped living room. We found a nail (carpentry rather than finger) on the floor under the table along with some cable sheathing- cleaners / last guests clearly missed that on clean up. Also, property was advertised with a ‘fan’ to help keep guests cool - lovely thought, except it failed the PAT test in 2014 and had a sticker on saying DO NOT USE!Apart from that it was fine, dark, but fine. Located about 2 miles from Carluke which has the essentials and access to rail links to Glasgow (which we love!).So, it served its purpose and with a little more thought and customer consideration it’s ok. Would I stay there again? No. Would I recommend it to others - no. Have I stayed in worse? Yes, much. And - it ended up with a booking fee which added quite a chunk to the cost which may have been the handlers……
