Meifod is a sunny little, stone-built village by the River Vyrnwy with a local pub and convenience store with a post office, enveloped by rolling hills and woodland, with attractive houses. Situated about 7 miles north-west of Welshpool, this pretty village also offers tennis courts (day tickets can be purchased cheaply from the village shop), its own ruby and football teams and a historic church where there is said to be the royal tombs of 2 former princes of Powys. Fishing permits for the River Vyrnwy and Banwy can also be purchased from the village shop. Lake Vyrnwy with its rspb reserve and Pistyll Rhaeader (Llanrhader waterfall) a 240ft waterfall in 3 stages, which is counted as one of the Seven Wonders of Wales, are only a short drive away. Both are sites of scientific interest. Gwyndu Cottage is about an hours drive away from 5 of the best places to ride mountain bikes in North Wales. Nearby, Llanfair Caereinion is in the heart of old Montgomeryshire's Banwy valley and is one of the smallest towns in Powys. Just a short walk over the Banwy Bridge from the hilly streets of the town centre, is the steam Welshpool to Llanfair Light Railway. Welshpool is a bustling market town, nestled in the Severn Valley 4 miles from the border between Wales and England. There is a lovely blend of shops, quality pubs and restaurants, as well as a restored cock fighting pit and interesting Heritage Trail. Visit the famous 13th Century Powis castle, or enjoy a cruise along the Montgomery canal. There is much to be enjoyed of an afternoon here. A gentle stroll through the town will have you taking in the Georgian architecture, there is even a golf club with a top of the world situation, overlooking the picturesque Welsh borderlands - a perfect location to practice your swing! Further afield is country town of Shrewsbury, with its half-timbered Tudor buildings, museums and lovely shopping experiences. An opportunity not to be missed!

Shame. Anyway, to the review: Prior to arrival, I had a lovely message asking what time I expected to arrive for key handover. Lovely gesture, makes this feel less transactional and way more welcoming. Was asked to message 10 minutes before I arrived, which I duly did from a farm up the road that has a milk machine and donkeys!! More on that on a different review. Arrived at a very well directed and signposted lodge and what a view. David was waiting, and was very patient. David showed us around the lodge, and the surrounding land. Everything was well pointed out both inside and out, and full instructions provided for all things that needed them. Nothing was a problem, and both David and Sonia were on hand if anything was needed, which again is a lovely touch. David even showed us around the other lodge as it was unoccupied, and it's just as beautiful. The lodge itself was gorgeous, so well designed and laid out. Very well decorated. Everything you could possibly want is provided, including a lovely welcome basket. Very considerate. The view from the large bifold doors is outstanding, even on a rainy day! The last day looked like something out of silent hill! Privacy from the hot tub was excellent and the tub itself was immaculate. Probably the cleanest one I've seen. The rooms in the lodge are all excellent, perfectly sized with good storage. Massive bathtub in the main bathroom and large shower in the ensuite. The sofa and indeed all the chairs were very comfy. Excellent kitchen facilities and a huge fridge and freezer. Outside, plenty of places to sit and enjoy the view. Hot tub had speakers built in too! Extra luxury, but to be honest the sounds of the working farm were much nicer to listen to. On that subject, I took a little walk and met some of the young calves. How nice it was to give them chin scratches! I honestly cannot thank David and Sonia enough, what a place to stay. Even had the sweetest message after leaving! Would love to return, this place is an absolute gem, as are its hosts.
