    Askrigg Holiday Cottages

The village of Askrigg with its old market cross and impressive Church of St Oswald is in the Wensleydale area of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The main street into Askrigg is lined with beautiful 18th and 19th-century homes, many featuring original clocks made by the area’s clockmakers. You’ll see examples in the nearby Dales Countryside Museum. You might recognise a house in the village as home to the fictional vet James Herriot. The King’s Arms pub was featured in All Creatures Great and Small as The Drover’s Inn.

At Snaptrip we have many holiday cottages in Askrigg so visitors can enjoy rambling adventures, such as along the Mill Gill stream to the Mill Gill Force waterfall. What our customers say about their holidays

Could you tell me when Sykes last visited this property for yous to claim it is a 4 star property.

Out of coutesy i emailed the landlord before I replied to your request for a review. My contact number is This is the Email i have sent to the landlord 5 days ago without response. Arriving at the cottage we came into a lovely spacious and comfortable first floor . The small lobby had a dog bowl and towels that was very pleasing for our dog Poppy. The kitchen was spotless with all the updated mod cons anyone could wish for. A bottle of red wine from the owners was a lovely touch. A nice dining table to eat from was also amust. Entering the spacious spottless sitting room found a very comfortable area where you could sit and relax with TV and internet connection which was excellent. However it goes very quickly downhill when going downstairs to the Bedrooms and Bathrooms. Your senses were blasted by lots of plug in airfreshners, reed defusers and random smellies and a plethara of disposable moisture de humiders. Unfortunitly this could not come close to masking the smell of damp. Undetered we ventured downstairs to find nice beds and bedrooms and well appointed spotless bathrooms and shower. Together with lovely clean fresh towels. Trying not to let the smell of damp spoil things we went for a walk and a bite to eat which was more than pleasant. The next morning found the sheets feeling dampish and the overwheming stench of damp. After 2 days our clothes in the wardrobes and the drawers smelt damp and mouldy thus we brought our clothes upstairs and put them all on the kitchen table. We tried another night in bed but the smell of damp became too overwhelming. We managed another night on the sofa but we had enough on the Tuesday morning and we returned home instead of coming home on the Friday which we had paid for.

After a 5 hour drive we arrived at Hillside House at 9 pm.

The key code provided by Sykes was wrong; when I phoned the owner he said that he had sent us an update by Whatsapp with the correct key code. As I am not on Whatsapp I had not received this update. When we got in the property it was clear that something was wrong - it smelt musty. On checking the rooms we found that it had not been serviced since the last occupants. There were piles of dirty bed linen by each bed, the carpets were dirty. When we phoned the owner, he was clearly shocked and contacted the cleaner straight away. The cleaner arrived by 9:30 pm with 2 assistants and assured us that the house would get a 'quick clean' in only 2 hours; however,by this time we had decided to return home; this was to be a treat to celebrate my wife's birthday. When she saw the house she was so upset and said that she did not want to stay. I drove home, getting home at 2 am. We asked for a refund of the £1788 paid for 6 days; the owner offered us £200 as compensation for the 'inconvenience', which we declined. We have rented from Sykes Cottages on 7 occasions in the last 11 months and have stayed in some delightful cottages but we have been so disappointed with this experience.

This is one of the cleanest cottages I have ever stayed in.

The property owners have made a good effort to combine rustic charm with modern style and luxuries. I can only assume that the owners are either meticulous cleaners or that the property has been recently redecorated, because it was absolutely immaculate. The property was confusing and difficult to find, but the upside of that was that it made the property very secluded and private, which I enjoyed very much. Often with these rural cottages you have to park far away from the property and lug all of your belongings to and from the car, but the property's gated driveway made this a pleasant exception. Sleeping wasn't too bad, since the area is so quiet, but the bed is quite firm. This, in fact, is the only aspect where I could recommend improvement - The bed would benefit from a mattress topper or entirely new replacement and the sofas are pretty hard too. All in all, this is a very enjoyable and well-stocked cottage and would seriously consider booking again if I return to the area.

It is a cosy cottage for two and dogs small garden but very nice and pretty secure. Very comfortable lounge area and nicely furnished.kitchen has everything you could want and more.Bedroom was lovely and one of the most comfortable beds I’ve slept in really lovely sheets and duvet and towels bathroom was very clean as was the rest of the cottage.Wonderful welcome pack really appreciated thank you.Now for the only down side it is on a fairly busy main road and the front door opens directly on to this and your only parking option is in a lay-by 100mtrs up the road makes it a little awkward loading and unloading people and dogs but I’m happy to say we managed quite well.Having said all that we thoroughly enjoyed our weeks stay in a fantastic part of the country.Sorry for the negatives just being honest ♥️

The cottage itself was very nice and comfortable and the in good order.

The general information and recommendations left by the owner were very good and helpful and we found the cottage generally well maintained and comfortable. The local pub was welcoming and pleasant. However, although we enjoyed our stay in the property we were unable to use the television as the sound quality on the set was so bad we could not use it. We tried adjustment but were unable to rectify the problem. After spending a day walking and exploring the the Dales it was disappointing not to be able to relax and watch some TV in the evenings. The TV set is in need of replacement or over hall.
