What our customers say about their holidays

    • Jen - Verified booking

Overall, The Lantern is a beautiful place.

It’s well located for exploring the village and its many attractions. It’s not far from many other great locations. The home has been finished wonderfully, but there were a few niggles. On arrival we were missing key elements for our stay, including wood and matches for the fire (given how cold it was during our stay, we’d hoped to use it regularly). Wood was shortly delivered but the store wasn’t filled, so we ended up getting more from the shop. The house guide wasn’t there for us, so we didn’t have any information for the property (we found some pages on how to light the fire eventually but that was all). The WiFi was shared by the host. Our hosts were also away for the weekend, so on later discovering we also had no washing up liquid left (apart from one small squidgy in the bottle) and no dishwasher tablets, they weren’t able to assist so we brought our own. While I don’t expect to necessarily have all you need, it felt like it had been forgotten to be restocked. Especially as on a hunt to locate more we came across a cupboard that had more of all the things we didn’t need (coffee pods, ear buds, laundry detergent), but not those we did. We were only provided with one bin bag for a week with no others in the property to be found. Luckily on purchasing more wood, we ended up with several of those bags. There was also a strong smell in the bathroom, so we had to have the window open for the entirety of our stay (during icy weather) in the hopes of dissipating it, but unfortunately it never went away. While the pressure of the ensuite shower was great, there were some mouldy residue patches, and the main washroom looks like it once homed a shower and seeing that reinstated would mean not having to awkwardly be in somebody else’s bedroom to change. The one parking space with two double rooms seems like a misstep, there’s plenty of space to extend the driveway even by a couple of feet to allow for two cars comfortably. As the property seems more aimed at adults, it would make sense to allow for two cars, especially given how expensive the nearby parking is per day. With some will power and creative parking, we were able to just about fit two smaller cars in, but lack much space to get in/out comfortably (with the cars touching, as paying >=£10/day for a week was too much). Finally, adding a small side table in the living room would aid being able to put your drink somewhere more within easier reach to the armchair. As I say, the location and property itself is lovely, as somebody who adores penguins I was delighted to be able to so easily visit the only Kings in England. It’s far enough from the bustle of the village that it is perfectly peaceful, while still all being walkable within the village. (If you’re planning a trip to the Mousetrap inn, you will struggle for parking!). We were provided pods for the coffee machine (luckily I knew how to use it, but there were no instructions for my fellow guest who did not, perhaps in the missing guide?) which often times you’re not. Once we had gathered the missing items (which I’m sure would have been provided by our hosts if they had not been away), we had a lovely stay.

Lovely House nice and spacious loved the decor top notch very comfortable stay the garden was beautiful ideal for our little dog to run around safely.

The only thing we would of liked more wardrobe space for sure there was not enough hangers in the rooms (hence went and got our own) we thought there was enough space for a small wardrobe in all the rooms to be fair.....liked your idea of hanging stuff on the rustic black pipe look but would say a wardrobe would benefit more..... perfect location for our stay. The property was very clean on arrival....but when we left and did our clean we could see that the single chair in the lounge had not been pulled out possibly by last people or not been hoovered behind was quite dusty maybe your cleaners should pull the furniture out when they go in on a change over day??? The large lounge curtains in back was coming unclipped so a couple of times I did re-up them back quite fidely to do the one on end of curtain seemed like it was broken clip wise was hanging down when we arrived but didn't look very nice....maybe an upgrade curtain wise to match smaller lounge and curtain pole would benefit this room now.....these are our personal feedback the house is absolutely lovely just a couple of minor things let it down. But would definitely stay again every thing was to our taste. The weather was fine on arrival but gradually got worse rain wise.... typical but we still enjoyed our stay we thought the house was lovely and up there with top marks on other properties we have stayed in for sure ....

      We absolutely loved our stay!

On arrival we were greeted with a lovely warm, clean house with everything we needed to start our holiday such as; tea, coffee, butter and milk plus some added luxuries too which were very appreciated! We read through the welcome pack which was helpful, there is lots of space in the back which we felt could have included how the house should be left e.g where the cleaners wanted the towels, what temp the heating should be on, where the key should be left, hopefully we did everything right. Also a few local leaflets for days out would have been super helpful but not too much of problem given the WiFi. There were a couple of very minor issues in the bathroom; the window was either stuck closed or quite stiff, we didn't force it for fear of not closing it again. There was also some mould on the bottom of the shower curtain and around the bath. The kitchen was really well equipped and appliances were easy to use. The extendable dining table was great when we did lots of food for all of us. The house was in a great location, the kids loved watching the stream train go by on occasion. We walked to a local Italian restaurant and then onto a cocktail bar (Tabu) which were both amazing, as was Queens Fish and Chips. Overall a very good stay and we'd happily book again!! Huge thank you to the owners for great hospitality.

We had a wonderful time staying at Well Cottage.

Its just a 5 minute walk into the village with all its amenities and attractions and only 2 minutes walk to the supermarket. The cottage itself is very spacious and well equipped. There is a single bedroom which you walk through to get to one of the double rooms, with an ensuite, which proved ideal for our baby with parents next door. Then there are 2 further double rooms, one with a lovely ensuite the other with use of a separate bathroom. All the double rooms were set up with super king size beds ( I.e. none as a twin as in the photos) this suited us fine but I think you'd need to make it clear if you needed twin rooms. The beds were comfy and the showers and baths powerful. With 2 lounges it meant the generations could do their own thing. The garden is large and fully enclosed, our dog loved playing catch before heading out on a walk. Also included in the cottage were thoughtful touches. A selection of goodies in the fridge, plus tea and coffee. Hand towels in all the bathrooms and tea towels. There's a tap and short hose pipe outside for washing the dog and muddy boots. Would highly recommend. Probably the best holiday cottage we've ever stayed in!
