What our customers say about their holidays

    • Jen - Verified booking

Overall, The Lantern is a beautiful place.

It’s well located for exploring the village and its many attractions. It’s not far from many other great locations. The home has been finished wonderfully, but there were a few niggles. On arrival we were missing key elements for our stay, including wood and matches for the fire (given how cold it was during our stay, we’d hoped to use it regularly). Wood was shortly delivered but the store wasn’t filled, so we ended up getting more from the shop. The house guide wasn’t there for us, so we didn’t have any information for the property (we found some pages on how to light the fire eventually but that was all). The WiFi was shared by the host. Our hosts were also away for the weekend, so on later discovering we also had no washing up liquid left (apart from one small squidgy in the bottle) and no dishwasher tablets, they weren’t able to assist so we brought our own. While I don’t expect to necessarily have all you need, it felt like it had been forgotten to be restocked. Especially as on a hunt to locate more we came across a cupboard that had more of all the things we didn’t need (coffee pods, ear buds, laundry detergent), but not those we did. We were only provided with one bin bag for a week with no others in the property to be found. Luckily on purchasing more wood, we ended up with several of those bags. There was also a strong smell in the bathroom, so we had to have the window open for the entirety of our stay (during icy weather) in the hopes of dissipating it, but unfortunately it never went away. While the pressure of the ensuite shower was great, there were some mouldy residue patches, and the main washroom looks like it once homed a shower and seeing that reinstated would mean not having to awkwardly be in somebody else’s bedroom to change. The one parking space with two double rooms seems like a misstep, there’s plenty of space to extend the driveway even by a couple of feet to allow for two cars comfortably. As the property seems more aimed at adults, it would make sense to allow for two cars, especially given how expensive the nearby parking is per day. With some will power and creative parking, we were able to just about fit two smaller cars in, but lack much space to get in/out comfortably (with the cars touching, as paying >=£10/day for a week was too much). Finally, adding a small side table in the living room would aid being able to put your drink somewhere more within easier reach to the armchair. As I say, the location and property itself is lovely, as somebody who adores penguins I was delighted to be able to so easily visit the only Kings in England. It’s far enough from the bustle of the village that it is perfectly peaceful, while still all being walkable within the village. (If you’re planning a trip to the Mousetrap inn, you will struggle for parking!). We were provided pods for the coffee machine (luckily I knew how to use it, but there were no instructions for my fellow guest who did not, perhaps in the missing guide?) which often times you’re not. Once we had gathered the missing items (which I’m sure would have been provided by our hosts if they had not been away), we had a lovely stay.

      This was an exceptional property.

Superbly well equipped with quality fixtures and fittings, plenty of kitchen utensils, pots, pans, etc, Comfortable beds and nice bed linen. The play room, with a selection of toys, books and games was a brilliant touch. The location was perfect for us; in the middle of Stow with easy walking (and running) from the doorstep, a short walk to a playpark for the little one, and plenty of pubs/restaurants if you fancy an evening out. The two-car barn for parking was great and if you have three cars, there are plenty of visitors spaces to the close which were hardly used during our stay. The neighbours are friendly and the close is so peaceful and quiet; we hope our grandsons didnt make too much noise! Stow is also well located to visit loads of places around and we would highly recommend this place... Also excellent support from Manor Cottages when at first we didnt think we had a microwave, only to find one of the 2 eye-level ovens was a clever, all-in-one oven - this was essential for heating baby milk, etc., The only slightly negative thing about the property were a lack of hooks in the bathroom for hanging wash-kits, and the bedroom door that rattled when the window was open (but easily fixed with a folded bit of newspaper). An excellent week's holiday with the family...

The house was beautifully clean and nicely furnished.

Great location too, within walking distance to the town centre. A few things would help make the house a 4 star rental. The second double bed is not at all comfortable, it felt very cheap and at only 4ft6ins wide, not really comfortable for two average sized adults IMO. Also the wooden headboard was not fixed to the wall or bed so it kept rattling. We had to place a towel on it to stop the noise. In the master bed there were no black out blinds only curtains that let lots of light in at dawn, about 4.30am making it impossible to sleep without eye masks. We found that the razor/toothbrush chargers in the bathroom and ensuite would not recharge anything. We had to buy toothbrushes as we couldn’t use our electric ones. The cutlery in the kitchen was of very, very low quality and not enough of it if renting to a party of 6. There are cutlery sets in the shops for less than £10 which make the ones supplied in the cottage laughable. So, our conclusion. Great cottage but needs rethinking on the points we have mentioned which wouldn’t cost much to put right but would really help make the place the quality rental it could be as it’s not cheap to stay there.

      Very clean and nicely decorated.

All appliances are high-end and practically new. Maintenance was very responsive as well. Close to downtown - just a very short walk. Very quiet and calm. Private. Spacious. Even has a little play room for kids. Can be very hot if the weather is over 75 degrees F outside, but there are several fans. Would be nice if all of them were strong, oscillating fans. There is only 1 fan that works really well. But the others are sufficient. Black-out shades in the bedrooms were very nice, as it gets really sunny. Owner needs to add a black-out shade in the 3rd bedroom, but the others had them. Bring lots of UK plug adapters for your electronics (if from elsewhere). If you want to stay in Stow-on-the-Wold, I wouldn't hesitate to book this one. It's not classically picturesque on the outside, but the inside amenities give you a lot more than some other listings that have flowers out front. You can walk around the corner to see all the other beautiful exterior facades without having to stay inside one that would compromise space and comfort. We enjoyed our stay.

The property was really lovely, very comfortable (beds were excellent) towels & linen quality & the property was warm & welcoming.

House was well equipped, we cooked a full Sunday lunch whilst there & there was nothing missing. A couple of things to pass on to the owners, diffusers in almost every room was a lovely touch but all were dry/empty! Candles in hurricane jars would have been great but none of them worked (simply new batteries needed) if they’re not told they cannot know. Coasters in the bedrooms should be added, the toilet roll holder in the main bathroom needs fixing, probably just a screw tightening. A 2nd lamp in the lounge would be good(we used one from the kitchen & returned it). The ironing board was the one thing that was poor, for the 1st time ever I packed un-ironed clothes & had a bit of a nightmare. The thing missing for us was a tv in the bedroom but thats not important to everyone. The location is great, the house was comfortable & clean & we would consider staying again it is a fantastic holiday rental.
