What our customers say about their holidays

    • Ann Wilson - Verified booking

The location could not be bettered. However, the cottage, although well-equipped, had a musty smell which never quite left. The downstairs bed was so uncomfortable that I had to move into a twin room upstairs. The general decoration needs renewing as there were many water marks on the ceilings and walls. It seemed a little run down since we visited 9 years ago. Our main issue was the wifi, or lack of it, which also affected the television. The very poor signal, (often no signal at all) should be mentioned in the cottage description. On the plus side, the wood burner was the best we've come across in over 40 years of self-catering in Scotland.

The cottage is on a private estate and has no road traffic so its peaceful and private. Although it could do with a bit of decorative updating it was fully equipped with the added warmth of a woodburner and a plentiful supply of logs. The cottage is spacious and was a pleasure to return to. The little green at the front has rural views and a bench from which to enjoy them. A charming and characterful place. Whithorn is an unspoilt and uncrowded haven.

My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed our week at Merton Cottage. The situation is idyllic and though isolated, not too far from all the shops one could want in Newton Stewart, 2 miles. The cottage itself is very well equipped, cosy and easy to heat. I have visited before in 2017 and fully intend to return as soon as possible.

Out holiday was wonderful, the location of the cottage wonderful, it was our third visit to garden cottage and sadly our last due to the decline in the property. Signs of damp in all rooms, paper coming off in places and decor wise the property is neglected, which is such a shame as it's a perfect holiday location.

Lovely cottage with everything you need. The most comfortable bed i have ever slept in. Lots of logs for cosy evenings by the logburner.
