    Arundel Castle

    In Norman times, Roger de Montgomery, first Earl of Sussex, built Arundel Castle on a bend of the River Arun to guard a strategic gap through the South Downs. The castle has known three sieges, the last in 1634 by Parliamentarians who were opposed to the rule of King Charles I.

    Ouse Valley Viaduct

    Between Haywards Heath and Balcombe, Ouse Valley Viaduct was originally built for the London to Brighton train line. It's now an instagram hotspot, so expect company around peak times. There's car parking nearby or a pleasant walk from Haywards Heath station. Dog friendly.

    A military aviation museum in the former RAF Tangmere airfield. Home to a vast collection of RAF memorabilia in 5 halls, & a selection of notable aircraft.

    Fishbourne Roman Palace

    A magnificent archaeological site in Fishbourne, where the remains of a Roman palace were uncovered in 1960. Beautiful mosaics, museum, audio visual programme.

    Weald and Downland Open Air Museum

    A great snapshot of British life in days gone by, this open air museum is forty acres including a plethora of woodland walking trails - perfect for walks with your four-legged pals. Dogs can enter most of the Museum’s buildings with some exceptions and must be on short leads. Tickets have to be pre-booked. Free car park.

    South Downs National Park

    The South Downs National Park is England’s newest national park (designated on 31 March 2010) but first settlements in the South Downs date back over 5000 years. It spans 87 miles from Winchester to Eastbourne in the east and has a total area of 628 square miles. It is steeped in history and has beautiful woodlands, forests, waterways, fields and chalk hills which inhabit all types of wildlife. It is a great place to walk, hike, bike, swim, fish and more. The South Downs Way is a bridleway that runs entirely through the South Downs park, from Winchester to Eastbourne (100 miles), and is entirely off road, making it a peaceful trail. The Park has many access points, car parks, accessible routes & facilities, cafes, organised experiences and play areas. The best place to plan your trip is by visiting the South Downs Centre, North Street, Midhurst, West Sussex, GU29 9DH
